But, what about protecting ourselves from other, less obvious burns \u2026 like summer burnout? No, I\u2019m not just talking about feeling rundown and exhausted from one too many pool party cocktails, or the stress of packing up a camper with your family for some long road trips. Gone are the days when summer implied endless leisure hours at a cottage, extended camping trips, or sleeping in with no worries about homework or exams. Most of us grownups still must work during the balmy summer days, while trying to juggle all the \u201cfun\u201d extra social activities and events that come with summer.<\/p>\n<p>For the average adult, summer doesn\u2019t necessarily mean a break. Over the years I\u2019ve seen a common trend where many professionals experience some form of burnout during the summer, either feeling distracted, unmotivated or overwhelmed. Clearly, this isn\u2019t caused by hot weather or the prevalence of Hawaiian shirts, socializing on patios, summer weddings, or umbrellas in our drinks. We aren\u2019t dealing with a case of \u2018fun-stroke\u2019 \u2026 so, why do people report feeling burned out when the calendar gets to July and August?<\/p>\n<p>For starters, following a yearlong stretch of working through autumn, winter, and spring, summer starts to feel like that inviting pool you just want to plunge into and finally forget all your work-related troubles. For many hard-working professionals and entrepreneurs with heavy workloads and responsibilities the stress never really ends.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What is Burnout?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/adi-goldstein-yVdN3xagPQk-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10206 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/adi-goldstein-yVdN3xagPQk-unsplash-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"summer burnout is different\" width=\"433\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/adi-goldstein-yVdN3xagPQk-unsplash-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/adi-goldstein-yVdN3xagPQk-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/adi-goldstein-yVdN3xagPQk-unsplash-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/adi-goldstein-yVdN3xagPQk-unsplash-1080x721.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a>To make sure that we\u2019re all on the same page regarding burnout<u>,<\/u> \u2018<em>summer fatigue\u2019 <\/em>or<em> \u2018summer burnout\u2019<\/em> is that sluggish feeling that you sometimes experience because of the effects of warmer weather. In contrast, \u2018real\u2019 or \u2018classic\u2019 burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>physical and emotional exhaustion<\/li>\n<li>cynicism and detachment<\/li>\n<li>feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Each of these is characterized by symptoms which are spelled out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/high-octane-women\/201311\/the-tell-tale-signs-burnout-do-you-have-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Burnout doesn\u2019t normally go away on its own so it\u2019s worth consulting a <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/how-psychology-can-help-your-career-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental health professional<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Often, summer\u2019s rise in temperature matches the increased need to find a balance between work and personal demands. This burden goes beyond the challenge of juggling your priorities to make it to your cousin\u2019s summer solstice themed wedding while writing also finishing a report for your boss on time. Although, I do believe this is where a lot of summer burnout begins.<\/p>\n<p>People with demanding careers are expected to attend a greater number of social and family events, and yet, still, maintain their work efficiency. Suddenly, the kids are out of school, and depending on their age(s) you\u2019ll need to find proper supervision, either in camps or daycare. You might also start dreading the mail, which may include a numerous summer engagement and wedding invitations. Then there\u2019s the pressure to book a cottage or road trip before the leaves change colour and it\u2019s too cold to swim.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there\u2019s the additional stress due to the unspoken assumption that we should all appear happy about it because \u2026 hey, it\u2019s summer! Unfortunately, not everyone can manage the multitasking of \u2018extra\u2019 fun without feeling overwhelmed by the added demands on their time.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Coping with Summer Burnout<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So, how can we cope and also avoid summer burnout? Well just like you\u2019d prepare for an outing in the scorching heat with a slathering of sunscreen, large hats, and plenty of water, you need to identify the risks and take preventative action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Create some \u2018unavailable hours\u2019 for yourself and stick to them. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artem-beliaikin-BsjASVFy6IU-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10207 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artem-beliaikin-BsjASVFy6IU-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"strategies for dealing with burnout\" width=\"401\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artem-beliaikin-BsjASVFy6IU-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artem-beliaikin-BsjASVFy6IU-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artem-beliaikin-BsjASVFy6IU-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artem-beliaikin-BsjASVFy6IU-unsplash-1080x720.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a>We\u2019re all human so there are times when we\u2019ll procrastinate, or our work will take longer than we expected. This means that sometimes, we\u2019ll need to work late or work at home even after putting in a full day. To prevent this from becoming a habit, one strategy is to have a set time every day where we give ourselves some time to relax without being beholden to technology or social media. This could mean putting our phone in \u2018do not disturb mode\u2019 or not responding to emails until after your morning meditation or coffee. There\u2019s something to be said for having some time every day when we don\u2019t worry about what other people want from us and we just catch our breath a little.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Don\u2019t over-schedule yourself, learn <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/06\/help-your-team-stop-overcommitting-by-empowering-them-to-say-no?utm_campaign=hbr&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>how to say no<\/strong><\/a>. This applies to both professional and social demands. If you can\u2019t juggle two expectations that will occur at the same time (or too close together), try being honest. It\u2019s amazing how others respond when you are forthright about your limits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Career Check-up.<\/strong> Despite the potential for lots of leisure activities, summer is also a season when you should take advantage of this time away from the office to consider the state of your career. Long road trips, lounging by the pool, camping, hiking, biking or canoeing is a great opportunity to reflect on what\u2019s going well &#8212; and what could use some improvement. Now might be the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/dear-dr-helen-advice-ideal-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">re-evaluate<\/a> your career path. Do you enjoy your work? Are you <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/overqualified-underemployed-ego-vs-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">earning enough<\/a>? Feeling secure in your position and industry? Maybe it\u2019s time to prepare for a promotion or learn some new skills that might help you improve your career progression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. To Don\u2019t List.<\/strong> Eliminate some stressors by creating a weekly to-don\u2019t list\u00a0of tasks.
