This blog article is a summary of some of those Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and my answers on this topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q1. These days, many people work all kinds of hours, including some evenings and weekends. Does this mean that they\u2019re workaholics?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A1.<\/strong> The short answer is no. Some people work long hard hours because they love their work, so they spend a long time enjoying what they&#8217;re doing. In other situations, the person feels obligated to work a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/victoria-heath-MAGAXAYq_NE-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10304 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/victoria-heath-MAGAXAYq_NE-unsplash-1024x612.jpg\" alt=\"workaholic woman starts day at 4 am\" width=\"447\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/victoria-heath-MAGAXAYq_NE-unsplash-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/victoria-heath-MAGAXAYq_NE-unsplash-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/victoria-heath-MAGAXAYq_NE-unsplash-768x459.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/victoria-heath-MAGAXAYq_NE-unsplash-1080x646.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a>Many self-employed people, business owners, and professionals will work a variety of daytime, evening and weekend hours. I know a lawyer who often works very early in the morning from 4 am \u2013 6 am on certain tasks. In exchange for late-night, weekend, and early morning hours, these people may take Fridays off to play golf or tennis, schedule hair or nail appointments during the workday, or take time off when things are slower\/quieter to keep things in balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">To be classified as a \u201cworkaholic\u201d, a person has to have a very strong need for work which has become so excessive that it has a negative impact on their health and well-being, relationships, and social functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The distinction between <em>work behaviours<\/em> (<em>that is, working long hours<\/em>) and <strong>a person\u2019s <em>mentality<\/em> around work<\/strong> (i.e., <em>a compulsion to work, <strong>or what we call workaholism<\/strong><\/em>) is important. Simply working long hours isn\u2019t associated with poor health. In contrast, workaholism is linked to more health-related complaints, sleep disturbances, emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and depression. To be even more specific, health and well-being among workaholics, regardless of how much they love their job, can be impaired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q2. Is there a link between being a workaholic and burnout?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_176494892_s-2019.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10305 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_176494892_s-2019.jpg\" alt=\"workaholics can become burned out\" width=\"387\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_176494892_s-2019.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_176494892_s-2019-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_176494892_s-2019-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A2.<\/strong> Again, the short answer is yes. Research shows a significant positive relationship between workaholism and burnout (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6298417\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F. Cheung et al., 2018<\/a>). Burnout is a chronic state of stress that leads to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">cynicism and detachment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">physical and emotional exhaustion<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">for more on burnout, read this <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/summer-burnout-affect-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previous blog article<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q3. Can a person who takes their work home with them be overworked and burned out because of how they perceive their workload and responsibilities rather than from their actual job?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A3.<\/strong> That\u2019s a great and tough question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Workaholism is due to a real or perceived obligation to work. Therefore, I\u2019d argue that we can feel overworked and\/or burned out because of how we think or feel about our work \u2026 whether our perceptions are accurate or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sometimes we can put extra or unnecessary pressure on ourselves to work. This pressure could be based on a desire to provide a certain lifestyle for ourselves or our loved ones, due to our ambition, perfectionism\/pride, etc. Other times, we are taking our work home because of circumstances. It could be a busy period in our organization, there are deadlines to meet, we\u2019re understaffed, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_86537202_s-2019.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10307 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_86537202_s-2019.jpg\" alt=\"workaholic employees may be overworked due to unfair expectations\" width=\"469\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_86537202_s-2019.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_86537202_s-2019-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Depositphotos_86537202_s-2019-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Unfortunately, I\u2019ve known too many people who are overworked to the point of workaholism and\/or burnout as a result of an overly demanding or toxic workplace. For instance, there are times when someone is in an unreasonably challenging and high-stakes position that requires an extraordinary ongoing effort with little chance of success (e.g., the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/scapegoats-glass-cliff-career-derailment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">glass cliff\/scapegoat<\/a> scenario that I addressed in a previous blog). Or, there are times when an employee is the victim of a bully boss who has put them on a contrived \u2018performance management\u2019 regime where they\u2019re forced to participate in punitive and sometimes humiliating additional scrutiny and burdensome administrative tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In this situation, the employee\u2019s work performance isn\u2019t problematic. Rather, their employer\/superior is abusing their power to mistreat the employee in a way that has the appearance of being warranted and based on the employee&#8217;s poor work. This is different from legitimate performance management where someone\u2019s work is sub-standard, and improvement is important and necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q4. You recently wrote a blog on psychometric testing and how various personality types are better aligned with certain roles and environments. Is there a psychometric test that predicts or identifies workaholism?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A4.<\/strong> Yes, certain personality types are more likely to be workaholics. There are countless online tests that are supposed to help us know if we\u2019re a workaholic. Some are free, others are probably paid. I don\u2019t have enough intimate knowledge of them to make any specific recommendations.
