It\u2019s also a time when many people are inspired (or obligated) to be more sociable. This is also true when it comes to the annual holiday work party, where standard \u2018business casual\u2019 attire, suits and blouses, might be replaced with snowflake, elf, or Rudolph sweaters. Thankfully, more organizations are realizing that not all employees celebrate the same holidays and they are becoming increasingly aware of and sensitive to the idea of diversity among staff and their habits. Similarly, more workplaces are acknowledging that not everyone equates festivities and parties with alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/working-through-addiction-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">addictions in the workplace<\/a>. It\u2019s such a prevalent problem that odds are good that many of us are working with people who are coping with an addiction. During the holiday season, it\u2019s worth acknowledging that this time of year can be a complicated and difficult time for people who are in recovery and\/or still struggling with their addictions.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past years, I\u2019ve also written about inclusion in the workplace (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/discuss-values-but-not-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">organizational values<\/a> and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/being-ourselves-vs-covering-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">covering<\/a>\u2019 at work). While many organizations are becoming more diverse with respect to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, etc. a good number of environments still have a long way to go on the inclusion front. One way to be more inclusive during the holiday season is to be aware that some people don\u2019t consume alcohol because of their Christian or Muslim beliefs and practices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11345 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"many people drink to survive the annual holiday work party\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1889646-1600x1066.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The annual holiday work party can be extremely stressful for some people. \u00a0It\u2019s no surprise that there might be some employees who would prefer to opt-out of attending if they expect that they will feel alienated or awkward during these celebrations. In addition, there are others who deal with social anxiety and\/or discomfort in large group settings and may use substances like alcohol (or cannabis) to get them through informal gatherings. If alcohol is readily available, they could overindulge to cope with these anxieties to the point of intoxication. This is another issue that could arise during holiday work parties and should be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Luncheons, banquets, holiday mixers and office parties are often synonymous with the proverbial punchbowl, or a raised wine glass for a toast. Amid this merrymaking, there is often hidden uneasiness that\u2019s taking the fun out of the occasion for some employees and employers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Here are 3 tips to keep the company party filled with cheers that everyone can enjoy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.Have non-alcoholic beverage options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11341\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-823x1024.jpg\" alt=\"mocktails offered at the Rideau Club in 2019\" width=\"419\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-823x1024.jpg 823w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-768x956.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-1235x1536.jpg 1235w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-1646x2048.jpg 1646w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-402x500.jpg 402w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Mocktails-1-Copy-1286x1600.jpg 1286w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/a>A simple and effective way to help staff who want to avoid alcohol (e.g., pregnant women, people honouring their religious beliefs, those in recovery, etc.) is to offer non-alcoholic beverages so that everyone can hold up a glass for a toast. Some establishments, including the Rideau Club, feature mocktails that look like fancy adult cocktails but don\u2019t include alcohol. In my experience, this considerate touch makes people feel much more welcome and at ease.<\/p>\n<p>Offering plenty of food, water, and soft drinks is another way to place less emphasis on alcohol. This will also curb any chance for an employee to overindulge and regret their behaviour the next day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><strong>Quality versus quantity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An effective way to make sure booze isn\u2019t the highlight of your holiday event is to order and serve a conservative volume of alcohol. Consider trying to limit the amount that is served to each person via drink tickets or hand stamps. If the event is being held in a hall and there is an open bar, limit the hours of the bar\u2019s operation. And if dinner is served, perhaps make that a time when servers can only provide one glass of alcohol per person. The focus should be more about the quality of food and beverage pairing, rather than the quantity of alcohol that\u2019s available for staff\u2019s consumption.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.Veto the vino and other alcohol altogether <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11342 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman disinhibited by alcohol at work holiday party \" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-1067x1600.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2102745-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some may find this an extreme measure, but businesses large and small are following this \u2018dry\u2019 trend during office work gatherings. Whether it\u2019s a holiday bash at a fancy banquet or a simple company picnic where employees bring their spouses and kids, more and more organizations are just not serving alcohol to their staff.
