This is the first time in history that the multigenerational workforce includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/karlmoore\/2020\/01\/13\/dos-and-donts-for-millennials-and-zs-managing-boomers\/#158df66d3480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four different generations<\/a>: Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and the first members of Generation Z are now colleagues. Diversity and inclusion efforts now need to add in the realities of \u201cage diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, our unemployment rate is low, meaning that job seekers have more options than ever, and employers are having trouble filling positions.<\/p>\n<p>In a job market like this, it\u2019s only practical to give job candidates a second and third look. Someone who may have been hastily screened out in a more competitive hiring environment may even turn out to be the perfect fit when employers look more carefully.<\/p>\n<p>In times like this, organizations need to take a closer look at those people that often get overlooked at hiring time: the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/neurodiversity-questions-answers-ofosu\/\">neurodiverse<\/a>, people with an openly \u201calternative appearance\u201d such as heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/dress-the-part-body-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">body art<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/successful-newcomers-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent immigrants<\/a> and people with disabilities come to mind.<\/p>\n<p>We can also expect to see more neurodiversity in the workplace in the coming years as people on the autism spectrum becoming more and more desired as workers for their particular skills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11396\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-767x1024.jpg\" alt=\"eccentric guy sought for multigenerational workforce\" width=\"306\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-767x1024.jpg 767w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-768x1026.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-1150x1536.jpg 1150w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-374x500.jpg 374w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052-1198x1600.jpg 1198w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/man-in-a-blue-dress-shirt-and-bucket-hat-936052.jpg 1334w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a>In early January, the top aide to the UK\u2019s prime minister posted an unusual recruiting message on his personal blog. Known to be somewhat unorthodox, <a href=\"https:\/\/dominiccummings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominic Cummings<\/a> has put out a call for a wide range of talent to apply for top government positions.<\/p>\n<p>His wish list is substantial, and includes \u201csuper-talented weirdos,\u201d and \u201cmisfits with odd skills.\u201d\u00a0 The posting has started a quiet but growing conversation about neurodiversity in the workplace, which strikes me as an indication that more conversation is to come.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11397\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"boomer male and millennial woman in multigenerational workforce\" width=\"267\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015-1600x1068.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_78289332_l-2015.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a>So, how do you navigate such interesting times in your multigenerational workplace? For older workers, these changes may be happening more quickly than they\u2019d like. The \u201cOK Boomer\u201d invective that recently sprung up is, anecdotally, at least, is both causing and indicating tension between older and younger workers. And older workers are firing back with complaints of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/career-change-resources-mature-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">age discrimination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Millennials and Generation X each make up about one-third of the labour force, and Baby Boomers make up 25 percent. Those numbers will change drastically in the coming years. By 2025, Millennials and Generation Z will make up nearly 75 percent of the workforce according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbeshumanresourcescouncil\/2018\/05\/09\/diversity-and-inclusion-matters-to-the-workforce-of-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this article on Forbes.com.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For anyone in a management role, trying to build a team made up of workers of four generations will be challenging. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/23971036_Managing_Diversity_and_Enhancing_Team_Outcomes_The_Promise_of_Transformational_Leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2009 research<\/a> published by the American Psychological Association suggests that when a workforce is more heterogeneous, conflicts are more likely unless there\u2019s (a) transformational leadership and\/or (b) inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>The good news for managers and leaders is, it can be done, and I can coach you through it.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an older worker having trouble navigating this brave new world, I can also help you learn how to survive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum<\/strong> &#8211; In March 2022, the Harvard Business Review published a series of six articles related to multigenerational workplaces.
