In the \u2018before times\u2019, we could sit close to someone, see their facial expressions as we communicated with them, shake hands, hug, or even kiss someone on the cheek. For now, most of that is on hold.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phone Anxiety and the \u201cCamera Shy&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people have <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/phone-anxiety-101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phone anxiety<\/a> so they avoid speaking on the phone. On the surface, phone anxiety may look like a problem that individuals should solve on their own. It\u2019s almost like other life skills like learning how to cook, swim, or drive that is worth mastering. Certain jobs that require verbal communication &#8211; not in person &#8211; require that employees can communicate verbally from day one. Employers do not expect to have to teach or develop these skills.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-pandemic, a lot of people were reluctant to use video platforms because they were uncomfortable with the technology and\/or felt shy about being on camera. Now that so many of us are working from home, we\u2019re counting on voice and video calls more than ever. Email is great, but there are times when nuance is too hard to communicate via words on a screen. Plus, there are times when it\u2019s important to collaborate as a group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Depositphotos_355736296_s-2019.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12022 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Depositphotos_355736296_s-2019.jpg\" alt=\"marque sign describes awkward communication gestures\" width=\"467\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Depositphotos_355736296_s-2019.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Depositphotos_355736296_s-2019-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Depositphotos_355736296_s-2019-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Depositphotos_355736296_s-2019-500x334.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has audio or video communication anxiety must be struggling to adapt to the new realities of awkward communication. \u00a0It\u2019s easy to see how anxiety around these forms of communication can have a negative impact on someone\u2019s career progression and development.<\/p>\n<p>The song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QrXDmoIVjxs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Just a Picture<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by KYLE ft.\u00a0Kehlani\u00a0that compares real-life interpersonal interactions to their digital equivalents. It shows us how much our use of phones has evolved. These days, many people use their phones for everything except talking. Almost overnight, so many real-life social and professional interactions have been forced online. It hasn\u2019t always been a seamless transition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Sort-of) Open for Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I recently wrote about the challenges of resuming in-person business operations during a pandemic \u2013 and coping with rehiring\/staffing obstacles (<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/pandemic-staffing-some-employers-struggling-to-re-hire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pandemic Staffing: Why Some Employers Are Struggling to Re-hire<\/a>). In this context, co-workers are coming back together in the workplace after being off work for weeks or even months. Above and beyond the complications of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/employment-after-an-extended-absence-from-the-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">returning to work after an extended absence<\/a>, staff are also re-adjusting to professional relationships without the benefit of certain valuable cues and behaviours (read <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/back-to-work-after-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/returning-to-work-after-absence-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a> for tips on navigating a return to work). What&#8217;s even worse than awkward communication is the fact that it will probably be harder to read certain social cues; even more difficult for those who are hearing impaired or on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Where I think it will be even more challenging is integrating new people into existing work teams. It may not be possible to meet for impromptu coffee breaks or get together over lunch, dinner, or cocktails where so many relationships have opportunities to develop from superficial into something more substantial where trust is built.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getvoip.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/03\/benefits-of-work-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Workplace friendships<\/a> and allies are important not only for supporting creativity, cooperation, and efficiency that comes with combined efforts, but they are also an important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/workplace-bullying#how-to-take-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buffer against bullying and harassment<\/a>.
