Some level of organizational churn and turnover is expected but it seems that the trend of leaving for greener job pastures is ramping up.<\/p>\n<p>In pre-pandemic 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/07\/workers-quit-their-jobs-at-the-fastest-rate-on-record-in-2019.html?__source=OTS%7Cfinance%7Cinline%7Cstory%7C&amp;par=OTS&amp;doc=106868931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a> reported that workers were leaving their jobs\u00a0at record rates so that they could access the pay raises and promotions that they weren&#8217;t getting within their workplaces. Now, Prudential Financial\u2019s survey \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.prudential.com\/increasingly-workers-expect-pandemic-workplace-adaptations-to-stick.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pulse of the American Worker<\/a>\u201d notes that after the pandemic, one in four workers who worked remotely during the Covid crisis plans to look for opportunities with a new employer once the threat of the pandemic has subsided.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s Driving These Departures? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12288\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Asian man considers leaving job\" width=\"295\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-1067x1600.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/paul-hanaoka-xXJmOhxtbts-unsplash-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/a>In Prudential\u2019s survey of 2000 American employees, 80 percent said they are planning on leaving because they are seeking career advancement; 72 percent say the pandemic made them rethink the value and relevance of their skill sets. As this public health crisis resolves, more than half of the potential job-hoppers have pursued new skills and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/best-jobs-training-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">training<\/a> \u2013 possibly so that they are better prepared for new employment opportunities in the coming months and years.<\/p>\n<p>Many employees acknowledge that they are leaving for new jobs that provide more flexibility. Even among people who aren&#8217;t actively considering changing jobs, 50 percent of people currently working remotely say if their current organization doesn&#8217;t continue to offer some remote-work options for the long-term, they&#8217;ll look for a position at an organization that offers part-time or even full-time remote work. I have lost count of how many clients, friends and associates have told me that they enjoy working from home because they no longer need to deal with modern racism, including microaggressions, and various forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/iworkplace-authenticity-practical-myth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exclusion<\/a>. \u00a0Intuitively, I assume that harassment and bullying would also be less of a problem in the context of remote work. Even if that is true, anecdotally, it seems that micromanagement and other behaviours that feel disrespectful or undermining do seem to have followed employees into the world of remote work. Similarly, organizations that have not followed through on the \u201cdiversity and inclusion statements\u201d made during the international discussions about <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/systemic-racism-and-the-public-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">systemic discrimination<\/a> may also be vulnerable to poor employee retention.
