{"id":13539,"date":"2022-01-22T08:51:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-22T13:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/?p=13539"},"modified":"2022-01-22T08:51:42","modified_gmt":"2022-01-22T13:51:42","slug":"six-leadership-lessons-from-ted-lasso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/six-leadership-lessons-from-ted-lasso\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Leadership Lessons from Ted Lasso"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ted-lasso-believe-Apple.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13542\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ted-lasso-believe-Apple-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"543\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a>Like so many others, I\u2019ve discovered the Apple+ show <em>Ted Lasso<\/em>, in which Jason Sudekis plays a successful American college football coach from Wichita, Kansas who moves to the UK to coach professional soccer (aka the sport known as football outside of North America).<\/p>\n<p>Many of my executive coaching clients have referenced the show. In particular, they\u2019ve made note of Jason Sudekis\u2019 portrayal of a kind and caring leader who emphasizes relationship building, leads with empathy, and empowers others to be the best version of themselves, on and off the field.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve recently rewatched the first two seasons &#8211; which is a first for me, as I don\u2019t normally rewatch anything!<\/p>\n<p>Since the earliest months of the pandemic, I\u2019ve been thinking about the unique demands being placed on leaders. With such an immediate and profound organizational cultural shift in March 2020 that happened in so many workplaces, leaders were finding themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/leading-from-home-guidance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading from home<\/a> and suddenly needed much stronger interpersonal skills than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Most employees are still dealing with their own new stresses, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/bouncing-back-from-pandemic-grief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pandemic grief<\/a>, and the worries and preoccupations of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/pandemic-flux-and-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing uncertainty<\/a>. \u00a0In addition, employees who are members of equity-seeking groups have concerns related to their sense of workplace <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/inadequate-inclusion-barrier-to-returning-to-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">belonging<\/a> (or exclusion).<\/p>\n<p>So, partway through rewatching season one of <em>Ted Lasso<\/em>, I was inspired by what I was seeing and hearing. Here are some of my reflections on what we can learn about leadership and workplace culture by watching the series.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>Star performers who mistreat others are not worth keeping around.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the show, Ted subs his star player Jamie Tartt out of a pivotal match because of his dreadful behaviour towards his teammates. In real life, I\u2019ve seen many instances of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workplace bullying<\/a> where \u201cstar\u201d employees who are productive yet extremely toxic bullies are rarely fired. Their supposed \u201cproductivity\u201d prevents them from being fired, even when they are ruining the organizational climate and productivity of others because of their cruel, mean-spirited behaviour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/The-Office-without-Assholes-podcast.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13546\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/The-Office-without-Assholes-podcast-1024x588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This issue is addressed in further detail in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-office-without-a-holes\/id1346314086?i=1000433927551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Office Without A**holes<\/a>\u201d episode of Adam Grant\u2019s <em>WorkLife<\/em> podcast, which I also highly recommend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2. Good ideas can come from anyone.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite his original role of soft-spoken \u201ckit man\u201d on the team, Ted and the other coaches remain open to good ideas from Nate. Leaders like Ted aren\u2019t concerned about the position or identity of the person who contributes the idea, but rather the idea itself. I\u2019ve heard of so many instances where ideas are immediately discarded because of where the idea came from \u2013 an employee who is too junior, or in some other way not \u201cone of the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at how <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/hiring-for-best-fit-without-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hiring for contribution, not fit<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/valuable-bipoc-leaders-perspective-risk-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unique value that BIPOC\/underrepresented leaders can deliver<\/a> also touched upon these themes.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>3. Psychological safety is important.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Brene-Brown-playground.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13543 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Brene-Brown-playground-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Brene Brown says, \u201cThe playground isn\u2019t safe if anyone is getting beat up.\u201d Everyone\u2019s psychological (and physical safety) matters. On <em>Ted Lasso<\/em>, Coach Ted, Coach Beard, and Higgins act in ways that make others feel emotionally and psychologically safe, valued, and welcome. When the tables turned and Jamie Tartt needed some emotional support, he got a healthy dose from Roy Kent in front of the entire team. Everyone is treated with respect and dignity, no matter their role or title in the organization. I would love to see a world in which this was the norm and not the exception.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>4. Team members support Sam Obisanya when he needs to take a stand against a sponsor who is violating environmental and human rights in Sam\u2019s home country. Rebecca stands up with Sam despite the financial risk that the team will face, and Ted gives Sam a platform to explain why he is uncomfortable with the stance that the sponsor is taking. We must not leave anyone behind.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Essentially, this is another way of saying that everyone matters, and inclusion matters. On at least two occasions, Ted notices that soft-spoken Nate is missing from the team bus. It turns out that Nate had been locked in the baggage compartment when he was under there organizing the luggage. It sets a tone for the entire organization when everyone is treated as a valued member of the group and shows that everyone matters and everyone is included without saying a word or jumping on a soapbox.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>6. There is more than one style of <\/strong><strong>leadership. <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Several months ago, a former client contacted me partway through a multi-day training session on \u201cexecutive presence\u201d that she was attending. She was disappointed with and even offended by the content. Her employer had sent her on expensive training that was really missing the mark. The toxic message from this training included the idea that there is only one \u201ccorrect\u201d way to be an executive or leader. It was a very narrow-minded, \u201ccookie-cutter\u201d approach that left no room for alternative styles or approaches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Depositphotos_37424933_S.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13549\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Depositphotos_37424933_S.jpg\" alt=\"Ted Lasso shows that there's no cookie cutter leader\" width=\"392\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thank goodness Ted Lasso wasn\u2019t forced to accept that false doctrine!
