Similarly, there are various styles of leadership, such as Authoritarian, Participative, Transactional, Transformational, and Servant-Leader.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional, stereotypical notions of what leadership looks like are also <em>agentic<\/em> in nature. Agentic qualities are culturally stereotypical masculine qualities, such as being competitive, aggressive, and dominant.<\/p>\n<p>So then let\u2019s look at a couple of notable, alternatives: \u00a0Angela Merkel and Jacinda Arden, both incredibly successful and yet somewhat unlikely leaders.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Alternative Leadership: Angela Merkel<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_13839\" style=\"width: 496px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Depositphotos_287539340_S.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13839\" class=\"wp-image-13839 \" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Depositphotos_287539340_S.jpg\" alt=\"unlikely leaders - Angela Merkel\" width=\"486\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chancellor Angela Merkel at the European Union leaders summit at the European Council in Brussels, Belgium on Jun. 22, 2017<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Germany\u2019s first female Chancellor, Angela Merkel, retired from politics in 2021 at the height of her popularity. After serving 16 years and four terms, the former scientist retired on her own terms with historic high approval ratings at home, and as one of the world\u2019s most respected leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Angela Merkel can also come off as quiet, dry and even bland; an almost unlikely leader. Ms. Merkel lacks the typical charisma one would expect of political leaders in the modern media age. Yet it is precisely this authentic seriousness and lack of fanfare, backed by integrity and a no-frills approach to politics that appeals to people in an age of boisterous, larger-than-life, attention-seeking politicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely not her style to lead,\u201d says <em>Maclean&#8217;s <\/em>political correspondent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/politics\/angela-merkel-the-real-leader-of-the-free-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miriam Lau<\/a>. \u201cShe negotiates and calms other people\u2019s temper tantrums. That she can do. But she doesn\u2019t like to lead, and she doesn\u2019t pontificate. She doesn\u2019t verbalize leadership. She doesn\u2019t like all these things. And still, she has to do it. There\u2019s no one else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What has really defined Merkel\u2019s tenure is how she led during key <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/jan\/07\/ten-reasons-angela-merkel-germany-chancellor-world-most-powerful-woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moments of crisis<\/a>. Whether it was the financial crisis when the world was hit by recessions and stimulus packages, engaging with Putin, or dealing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/commentisfree\/2021\/sep\/21\/refugee-crisis-two-myths-angela-merkel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European refugee crisis<\/a>, she has been referred to as the \u201dde facto leader of Europe\u201d due to her influence and accomplishments.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Compassionate Leadership: Jacinda Arden<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_13840\" style=\"width: 515px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PM-Arden-The-Atlantic.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13840\" class=\"wp-image-13840 \" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PM-Arden-The-Atlantic-e1647694096646.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PM-Arden-The-Atlantic-e1647694096646.jpg 505w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PM-Arden-The-Atlantic-e1647694096646-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 505px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Simon Schluter \/ Fairfax \/ Headpress \/ Redux (The Atlantic, APRIL 19, 2020)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Likewise, New Zealand\u2019s Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has been commended for her compassionate, empathetic yet decisive leadership style. According to leadership professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/entertainment\/people\/jacinda-ardern-popularity-715953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claire Collins<\/a><u>,<\/u> Jacidna Arden \u201cembraces leadership differently from most of her national and international counterparts. She uses \u201cwe\u201d much more often than she uses \u201cI.\u201d \u00a0She talks about the people that she is lucky to work with and those she serves, thus embodying a more servant-leadership style, rather than the usual individualistic authoritarian leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since becoming Prime Minister in 2017, Arden has shown that she is someone who means what she says, and does what she says she\u2019s going to do. Her authenticity, says Collins, is further shown by taking \u201ca thoroughly modern approach to leadership in a world where her peers still tout\u2026 old habits including showing strength, never admitting mistakes, and, if backed into a corner, distracting the press with another story.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Leading Through Crisis<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Merkel and Arden are just two of many leaders who embrace the kind of leadership traits that go against the cultural norm of what the typical leader should look like. They lead in a courageous way that\u2019s authentic and genuine, under intense scrutiny on the national and international stage, in a male-dominated arena.
