According to the Industrial\/Organizational Psychologists at <em>Psychometrics.com<\/em>, 95 percent of leaders believe they are self-aware, while a shocking 10-15 percent actually are.\u00a0Ouch, that\u2019s a big self-awareness gap.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Depositphotos_61914767_S.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14311\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Depositphotos_61914767_S.jpg\" alt=\"a lack of emotional intelligence adds to self-awareness gap\" width=\"434\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a>In a previous blog, I discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/self-awareness-crucial-skill-for-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaders and self-awareness<\/a>, where self-awareness is the ability to reflect on and accurately assess one\u2019s own behaviours, skills and the impact these have on others. Of course, this is linked to emotional intelligence (i.e., the ability to identify, understand, and manage not only your own emotions but also those of others), which is highly correlated with effective leadership and success in general.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Internal vs. External Self-Awareness<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/self-awareness-crucial-skill-for-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>, I also explained how self-awareness could be split into <em>internal <\/em>self-awareness and <em>external <\/em>self-awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Internal self-awareness is the ability to look inward and reflect on and understand your own skills, behaviours, values and motivators. It is the self-understanding of who you are, your strengths, weaknesses, feelings and goals.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, external self-awareness is the understanding of how others see us and how our impact is felt. In other words, a leader\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychometrics.com\/closing-gaps-intention-impact-self-awareness-critical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intention\u00a0and\u00a0how it aligns with that leader\u2019s impact.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Intention is what someone knows about himself\/herself and what they hope to accomplish, while impact is an understanding of the results of one\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The Self-Awareness Gap: Intentions vs. Impact<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is a self-awareness gap when there is a disconnect between our intentions and their impact. This is where we find leadership blind spots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cThe more closely aligned an individual\u2019s intention and impact are, the smaller the awareness gap will be.\u201d <\/em>\u2013 <em>Psychometrics.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To gauge\u00a0<em>intention<\/em>, the internal side of self-awareness, we use personality assessments to explore our preferred styles of operating, values and motivators. This is the \u201cfun\u201d stuff; personality assessments that often confirm what we tend to know on some level.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, a leader\u2019s\u00a0<em>impact<\/em> is harder and often more uncomfortable to gauge. First and foremost, we need to measure objectively. With honest and objective feedback, leaders learn their blind spots \u2026 how their behaviours are received\/perceived by others and opportunities for development become apparent.<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Depositphotos_208720414_S.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14312 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Depositphotos_208720414_S.jpg\" alt=\"emotional aspect to self-awareness gap\" width=\"422\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though it can be uncomfortable, it\u2019s crucial to an organization\u2019s success. When a leader is self-aware, he\/she\/they can eliminate the gap between what they are trying to accomplish and their impact \u2013 the results of their actions.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a leader\u2019s intention may be to encourage autonomy in his staff, but he could appear to others as so hands-off that he\u2019s uninterested. Another leader might intend to provide clear guidance, but he or she is perceived as a controlling micromanager. Both leaders have positive intentions but may not have the desired impact if they are unaware of how others interpret their behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>It takes courage to face our shortcomings, but it is worth the effort and the potential short-term discomfort. The goal is to reduce the self-awareness gap. In many organizations, the performance feedback mechanism isn\u2019t enough to get this information. Despite good intentions, most managers and superiors are too busy to give actionable feedback. They are often preoccupied with meeting their own objectives, and especially in hybrid and remote contexts, they may not see enough of others\u2019 performance in action to be able to weigh in.
