The country is littered with hundreds of abandoned factories standing as silent, crumbling homages to an era when all one needed to make a decent living was a willingness to work long hours and the ability to numb themselves to the monotony of an assembly line.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6197\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/abandonded-1784150__340.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6197\" class=\"wp-image-6197\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/abandonded-1784150__340.jpg\" alt=\"Abandoned Factory\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abandoned Factory Replaced by Other Types of Employment<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But those times are gone. Today, those jobs have been exported to cheaper labour markets. Others have been replaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/is-automation-your-newest-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">robotic arms<\/a> that never complain, get sick, or rally other workers to unionize.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Wait for change &#8230; or be the change<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know what it feels like to be rendered obsolete by <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/automation-happening-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">technology<\/a> or to have your job outsourced from under your feet, you have two choices:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either, as John Mayer sings it, \u201cwait on the world to change,\u201d (which I don\u2019t recommend) or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can change to meet the new requirements for success in the current labour market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know &#8230; easier said than done. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After losing a job, it can take weeks of scouring through <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/hidden-consequences-online-screening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">web<\/a> and newspaper listings to find a position that looks like it could be a good fit for your skills. Then, of course, you have to compete with a few hundred applicants to get an interview. And if you manage to get to that point, botching a single question could end the whole process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Darwin, the British natural scientist responsible for the theory of evolution once wrote, \u201cIt is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Want to get hired or promoted? Get help! <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who best manage change don\u2019t often do it alone. Yet, most people who lose their jobs seem to believe that the journey to rewarding and fulfilling employment has to be a long and arduous trip. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m here to tell you that it doesn\u2019t. You might be excellent at what you do, but that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re an <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/expertise-credentials-different-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expert at marketing your skills<\/a> to employers. It\u2019s why bands use promoters, actors have agents, and Fortune 500 CEOs don\u2019t handle marketing themselves \u2026 you need to be able to recognize your strengths as well as your \u201cnot-so-strengths.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6202\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/job-offer-with-a-pen.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6202\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6202\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/job-offer-with-a-pen.jpg\" alt=\"Job Offer with a Pen\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Get That Job Offer!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a career coach provides you with more confidence when re-entering the labour market, and helps to recognize and leverage your skills to increase overall employability. That means less time looking for a job, and more time <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Be Fussy. Your future depends on it. <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all career coaches aren\u2019t created equal, and the industry itself is unregulated. That means you have to be very careful about the coach you choose. It\u2019s important to do your homework and ask specific questions about their credentials and experience. For example, if you\u2019re trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/self-employment-reality-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">start your own business<\/a>, speaking to a coach whose experience was gained as the manager of a small retail store (plus a few days of coaching training) might not get you the results you\u2019re looking for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I\u2019m asked about my experience, I\u2019m confident that professionally and academically, I can meet the needs of most of my clients. But if I believe I can\u2019t provide you with the advice and guidance you need, I can usually find someone who can.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>It\u2019s a relationship, not a marriage<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important that career coaching doesn\u2019t last forever. It takes four years (or more) to get a PhD in most subjects, so unless you\u2019re trying to become the next Richard Branson or Bill Gates, be wary of coaches who are motivated to keep all their clients with them over the long term; they may be more motivated by your money than by your success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6209\" style=\"width: 382px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Relationship-Not-Marriage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6209\" class=\" wp-image-6209\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Relationship-Not-Marriage.jpg\" alt=\"Pinky Swear\" width=\"372\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s a Shorter Term Relationship, Not a Long-Term Contract<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My basic package begins with a simple client assessment, followed by three additional sessions where the results of the test are used to assist me in providing strategic guidance to help you get your career on track. I offer more comprehensive packages, but they are tailored to your specific career objectives.
