On your website, business cards, and other places it says \u201c<\/strong>More than career coaching, <em>it\u2019s career psychology<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><strong>\u2019\u00a0 What do you mean by that?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A1.<\/strong>\u00a0The marketplace is full of people who use the title &#8216;Coach.&#8217; Since there are no\u00a0universal standards or regulations, the level of proficiency and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/value-of-expertise-and-why-experts-still-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expertise<\/a> varies wildly. There are &#8216;credentials&#8217; that can be bought online or earned over the span of a few days. It\u2019s very difficult to know who to trust, especially when the stakes are high in your career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_33035107_m-2015-stressed-guy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6650\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_33035107_m-2015-stressed-guy-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Businessman having career problems - clinical psychology can help\" width=\"332\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_33035107_m-2015-stressed-guy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_33035107_m-2015-stressed-guy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_33035107_m-2015-stressed-guy.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">For instance, a significant proportion of the workforce is precariously employed. Due to these structural changes in the economy, many educated people are working below their potential. This often means that their earnings are lower than they should be. This chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/overqualified-underemployed-ego-vs-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">underemployment<\/a> and financial hardship can damage one\u2019s self-esteem, and contribute to other emotional problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">To make matters worse, there are plenty of overwhelmed leaders and managers who aren\u2019t able to cope with this &#8216;perfect storm&#8217; of high potential, underemployed employees or the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/exponential-technologies-impact-careers-hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other challenges<\/a> facing many workplaces. So, particularly for ambitious professionals, their career-related struggles often require the nuanced, skilled approach of a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/why-io-psychology-useful-strategic-career-coaching-hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">career psychologist<\/a>.&#8217; One, who understands how employees and leaders fit into the larger organizational context which goes far beyond the superficial or mechanical aspects of career development or coaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q2.\u00a0 Do you think society is more aware and acclimatized to psychology? And, has that attracted additional clients?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A2.<\/strong> As a result of pop psychology seen on shows like Donahue, Oprah, and Dr. Phil, there\u2019s more awareness of the positive impacts that clinical psychology can have on a person\u2019s life. With that said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-industrial-organizational-psychology-2795302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Industrial\/Organizational<\/a> psychology is not as well known as clinical psychology. Most people hear about what I do through word-of-mouth from clients, or online via search, social media, or my <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_34578941_m-2015-psych-cloud.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6655\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_34578941_m-2015-psych-cloud-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Clinical Psychology for Career Support\" width=\"327\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_34578941_m-2015-psych-cloud-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_34578941_m-2015-psych-cloud-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_34578941_m-2015-psych-cloud-510x382.jpg 510w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_34578941_m-2015-psych-cloud.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q3. It seems to me you deal with two types of clientele: one that has organizational issues that can affect the entire company, and individuals with challenges that have negatively affected their work. Is that accurate? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A3.<\/strong>\u00a0I certainly deal with a wide range of clients. Companies and other organizations often use\u00a0my <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/hr-services-business-non-profit-government-public-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HR services<\/a> for testing\/assessments to\u00a0hire, promote, or develop leadership in employees. I love this work because when the right people are in the correct roles, everybody benefits. I\u2019m also excited about my <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/deluxe-counselling-package-customizable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one-on-one career coaching<\/a>. These are clients who really want to make the most of their skills and experience but they haven\u2019t been able to fully succeed. The HR work that I do gives me unusual insights that make me more effective as a Career Coach. Likewise, when I\u2019m working one-on-one with individuals I am more mindful of their perspectives and concerns in broader business\/organizational situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q4. Let\u2019s focus on individual clients seeking your psychology services. Do they feel less stigma coming to you for stress management, and\/or anxiety and depression in regards to their work rather than a clinical psychologist? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A4.<\/strong>\u00a0If a client approaches me to help them with anxiety and\/or depression, I always refer them to a clinical psychologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">However, if their problems are mainly due to what\u2019s happening to them in the workplace (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bullying<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sexual harassment<\/a>) or as a business owner, then there are usually things that I can help them with that a clinical psychologist can\u2019t address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q5. Can you give me some examples?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A5.<\/strong>\u00a0A great example is dealing with harassment\/<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/toxic-workplace-should-i-stay-or-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">toxic behaviour<\/a> in the workplace. A <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/how-psychology-can-help-your-career-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clinical psychologist<\/a> is primarily able to help someone develop and implement strategies to recover from those emotionally damaging circumstances.\u00a0I help them navigate the organizational context, identify cues, and more importantly create a graceful exit and transition into a better work environment. In my experience, by the time someone reaches out to me, they\u2019ve already exhausted the viable (gentle) options. When those interventions haven\u2019t worked, it\u2019s time to make a clean break and get into a new role that is free from the abusive behaviour<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0that is common in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/toxic-workplace-should-i-stay-or-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dysfunctional workplace<\/a>. It\u2019s highly unlikely that the bad environment is going to correct itself. In a perfect world, after my client is safely situated in their new role, with their permission, I would love to clarify things for the organization so that other employees don\u2019t suffer the same fate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q6. So, what are the most common issues you encounter from your clients? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A6.<\/strong>\u00a0I have seen countless clients who have told me that they feel like they are stuck in an intimidating schoolyard filled with bullies, even though it\u2019s an office environment. <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Workplace bullying<\/a> is a very real problem, and it seems to be occurring in a variety of professional workplaces. I also deal with clients who are unable to deal with their anxiety during large meetings or forums where they must <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/tongue-tied-public-speaking-youre-not-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speak publicly<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_41937823_m-2015-confidence.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6653 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_41937823_m-2015-confidence-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Clinical Psychology can help with confidence about career and life\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_41937823_m-2015-confidence-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_41937823_m-2015-confidence-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_41937823_m-2015-confidence.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Other clients express dissatisfaction with their career path, and they are desperate for a change. There are also many professionals who feel they don\u2019t belong or are not good enough for the position they have landed. This common misconception has been coined the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/07\/everyone-suffers-from-imposter-syndrome-heres-how-to-handle-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">imposter syndrome<\/a>.\u201d I have met successful CEO\u2019s, lawyers, doctors, accountants, and teachers who experience this, despite having the required skills for their role. In general, all my clients have one objective in common: they want to reinvent\/ change their professional lives for the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q7. It sounds like those issues overlap with the same troubles that motivate people to seek help from a clinical psychologist. Have some of your clients been referred from a clinical psychologist or vice versa? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A7.<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, clinical psychologists who know about my services have told their clients about me. Similarly, when I have clients who would benefit from the support of a clinical psychologist, I give\u00a0them the names and contact information of psychologists who they\u2019re likely to work well with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Q8. Would you say that some clients might feel more hesitant about going to see a clinical psychologist, than an I\/O psychologist?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A8.<\/strong>\u00a0 I suspect that some are reluctant to see clinical psychologists because they are uncomfortable discussing very private and emotionally sensitive matters. Although our livelihoods and issues that threaten our career are also personal, the fact is that it\u2019s usually easier to talk about \u201cwork\u201d struggles than it is to reveal intimate feelings and experiences in other areas of our lives. I can assume that someone might be more comfortable telling a colleague that they are working with a career coach or I\/O psychologist than they\u2019ll be describing their sessions with a clinical psychologist. Time spent with me can be described more as professional strategy and less about mental health (<em>unfortunately, there is still some unfair stigma around mental health<\/em>). Do you think it\u2019s beneficial to break down these walls between I\/O and clinical psychology so that more people can seek advice, help, and guidance from both domains of expertise?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A9 <\/strong>Absolutely. But, I want to make it clear that what I do and what a clinical psychologist does are distinct and shouldn\u2019t be bundled as one and the same.
