Those were the days \u2026 right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_12808292_m-2015-desk-by-ocean.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6897\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_12808292_m-2015-desk-by-ocean-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"empty desk by ocean summer burnout\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_12808292_m-2015-desk-by-ocean-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_12808292_m-2015-desk-by-ocean-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_12808292_m-2015-desk-by-ocean.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">For most adults, summer doesn\u2019t necessarily mean a break. And, although it remains a popular season for people to book time off for a \u2018staycation\u2019 or vacation, I think it\u2019s still safe to assume that those two sun-filled months don\u2019t always imply fun and relaxation. In fact, over the years I\u2019ve seen a common trend where many professionals experience some form of burnout during the summer, either feeling distracted, unmotivated or overwhelmed. Clearly, this isn\u2019t actually caused by hot weather or the prevalence of Hawaiian shirts, patio parties, or umbrellas in our drinks. We aren\u2019t dealing with a case of \u2018fun-stroke\u2019 \u2026 so, why do people report feeling burned out when the calendar gets closer to July and August?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">For starters, following a yearlong stretch of working through autumn, winter, and spring, summer starts to feel like that inviting pool you just want to plunge into and finally forget all your occupational troubles. It becomes that mirage of hope after running a grueling marathon where you keep seeing that finish line, but somehow it never gets closer. I say this because for most professionals, especially with challenging workloads and responsibilities the stress truly never ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What is Burnout?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Before going any further, I\u2019ll break down what a \u2018real\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/high-octane-women\/201311\/the-tell-tale-signs-burnout-do-you-have-them\">burnout<\/a> is, just so that we\u2019re on the same page. Summer fatigue or summer burnout is that sluggish feeling that you sometimes experience because of the effects of good weather. In contrast, \u2018real\u2019 or \u2018classic\u2019 burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">physical and emotional exhaustion<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">cynicism and detachment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Each of these is characterized by symptoms which are spelled out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/high-octane-women\/201311\/the-tell-tale-signs-burnout-do-you-have-them\">here<\/a>. Burnout doesn\u2019t normally go away on its own so it\u2019s worth consulting a <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/how-psychology-can-help-your-career-part-2\/\">mental health professional<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Often, summer\u2019s rise in temperature matches the increased need to perform a balancing act between work and personal demands. This burden goes beyond the hassle of juggling to make it to your cousin\u2019s summer solstice themed wedding while writing a report for your boss. Although, I do believe this is where a lot of summer burnout begins. All at once, people with demanding professions are expected to attend a greater number of social and family events, and yet, still maintain their work efficiency. Suddenly, the kids are out of school, and depending on their age(s) you\u2019ll need to find proper supervision, either in camps or <\/span>daycare<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">. You might also start dreading the mail, which may include a smattering of summer engagement and wedding invitations. Not to mention the pressure to book a cottage or camping excursion before the leaves change <\/span>colour<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> and it\u2019s too cold to swim. It\u2019s no wonder so many are exhausted when they\u2019re expected to put in the same number of hours in their work- week while doing these extra activities. And what is additionally stressful is the unspoken assumption that we should all appear happy about it because \u2026 hey, it\u2019s summer! Unfortunately, not everyone can manage the multitasking of \u2018extra\u2019 fun without feeling overwhelmed by the added demands on their time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_113844494_m-2015-time-out-burnout.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6899\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_113844494_m-2015-time-out-burnout-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"take timeout to avoid burnout\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_113844494_m-2015-time-out-burnout-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_113844494_m-2015-time-out-burnout-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Depositphotos_113844494_m-2015-time-out-burnout.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Coping with Summer Burnout<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">So, how can you cope and also avoid summer burnout? Well just like you\u2019d prepare for an outing in the scorching heat with a slathering of sunscreen, large hats, and plenty of water, you need to identify the risks and take preventative action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>1. Plan ahead.<\/strong> This means taking the time to sort out your calendar in advance so that you can schedule your vacations, book your children\u2019s activities, and also to ensure you don\u2019t accidentally over-schedule yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>2. Learn <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/06\/help-your-team-stop-overcommitting-by-empowering-them-to-say-no?utm_campaign=hbr&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social\"><strong>how to say no<\/strong><\/a>. This applies to both professional and social demands. If you can\u2019t juggle two expectations that will occur at the same time (or too close together), try being honest. It\u2019s amazing how others respond when you are forthright about your limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>3. Career Tune-up<\/strong>. Despite the potential for lots of leisure activities, summer is also a season when you should take advantage of this time away from the office to consider the state of your career. Long road trips, lounging by the pool, camping, hiking, biking or canoeing is a great opportunity to reflect on what\u2019s going well and what could use some improvement. Now might be the time to re-evaluate your career path. Do you enjoy your work? Are you earning enough? Feeling secure in your position and industry? Maybe it\u2019s time to prepare for a promotion or learn some new skills that might help you improve your career progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>4. To <em>Don\u2019t<\/em> List<\/strong>. Eliminate some stressors by creating a weekly to-don&#8217;t list\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">of tasks. Evaluate each bullet point on your to-do list by asking: 1) Is there someone to whom I can delegate this?\u00a0 2) Can this task wait until next week without creating any problems? 3) Can this assignment be altered to make it simpler or less time-consuming? These simple questions will help you to prioritize your workload while also de-cluttering your obligations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>5. Stay Healthy. <\/strong>Maintaining a routine of good nutrition, plenty of sleep and exercise can go a long way.
