Eventually, I\u2019ve said to the ones I know well, \u201cI don\u2019t know who holds more secrets, is it you or is it me?\u201d More often than not, I\u2019m met with a curious furrowed eyebrow or a soft, knowing, chuckle.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to grasp why lawyers keep a client\u2019s personal information to themselves. They deal with a variety of intimate matters such as divorce, separation, child custody, wills and estates, trademarks, copyrights, etc. Their success relies heavily on being discreet. What is less obvious is that I too have access to sensitive information when working with my clients.\u00a0 This means that I also share the task of keeping things very quiet in my line of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>For me, Discretion is a Little Word that Carries a Big Obligation<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Morally, I am someone who understands the importance of keeping what has been shared with me with in the strictest of confidence.\u00a0 As a specialist in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-industrial-organizational-psychology-2795302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I\/O Psychology<\/a> and a member of the Society for I\/O Psychologists (SIOP) since 1999 (and also a member of the Canadian Psychological Association [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpa.ca\/public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPA<\/a>]), I am ethically bound to maintain clients\u2019 privacy and confidentiality. So, I started using <strong>labels<\/strong> like <strong>\u2018Career Coach\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018HR Consultant\u2019<\/strong> mainly because they are more relatable and they also describe <em>how<\/em> I use my training in psychology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">However, what is even less known about my profession is that I am qualified to work in complicated and often deeply personal situations that most people would not want to have discussed openly in their community, family, or in front of their colleagues\/peers. These are serious matters that I have taken on when other \u2018normal\u2019 Career Coaches and\/or HR Consultants are reluctant or lack the training and\/or experience to take on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_48136331_m-2015-psych-word-cloud.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6679\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_48136331_m-2015-psych-word-cloud-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"discretion practiced in psychology words\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_48136331_m-2015-psych-word-cloud-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_48136331_m-2015-psych-word-cloud-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Depositphotos_48136331_m-2015-psych-word-cloud.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>For instance, during consultations, I\u2019ve had clients reveal complications related to their <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/divorce-career-progression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">divorce<\/a>, separation, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace bullying<\/a>\/harassment, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-racism-watershed-moment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discrimination<\/a>, burnout, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/mental-health-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental health<\/a> issues (especially depression and anxiety). On any given day, a client may tell me that they are accessing my services to improve their career and livelihood before <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/domestic-violence-doesnt-stay-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">separating<\/a> from an abusive spouse. Likewise, people seek my advice on how to leave a toxic or <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/toxic-workplace-should-i-stay-or-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unpleasant work environment<\/a> without putting a dent in their resume or jeopardizing an important job reference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">In all my interactions with clients, I am honest, hardworking, and trustworthy. From the beginning, it is clear that I never divulge our private discussions or (their) plans to anyone without their permission. Staying discreet is both an ethical and a professional must, and it\u2019s how I represent myself in everything I do. Just as a lawyer or medical doctor would have to remain tight-lipped about their client or patient confidentiality, I will not compromise a client\u2019s reputation or their ability to get themselves out of a bad situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7045\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Yellow-Rose-Bouquet-by-FTD.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7045\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7045\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Yellow-Rose-Bouquet-by-FTD-268x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bouquet of Yellow Roses\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Yellow-Rose-Bouquet-by-FTD-268x300.jpg 268w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Yellow-Rose-Bouquet-by-FTD.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yellow Rose Bouquet by FTD (<em>also symbolic of friendship and Zonta<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u201cA rose by any other name would smell as sweet.\u201d \u2013 William Shakespear, Romeo, and Juliet.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Not all career coaches are created equal. <strong>I <em>have<\/em> to comply with<\/strong> the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpa.ca\/docs\/File\/Ethics\/CPA_Code_2017_4thEd.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPA Code of Ethics for Psychologists<\/a><\/strong>. This is not true for the vast majority of career (or business) coaches, but hopefully, they have some type of code of conduct. As a client seeking coaching or HR services, it\u2019s important to know who you are trusting with your high stakes situation. \u00a0I won\u2019t argue that others who are not governed by a professional association are unethical, but I will say that I\/O Psychologists like myself have a lot more to lose when we don\u2019t honour these Codes of Ethics, Conduct, and Guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">There is a wide range of skill and approaches in the coaching industry. It\u2019s fair to say that some designations are significantly less rigorous than a reasonable person would expect. My <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/value-of-expertise-and-why-experts-still-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expertise<\/a> is based on 10 years of formal education and many more years of experience dealing with difficult and often complex information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Covert Assignments<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">When I have revealed the ways in which my work involves <em>\u2018<\/em>covert assignments\u2019 I\u2019m usually met with a surprised response of \u201cWow \u2026 I didn\u2019t realize the scope of what you do or the level of discretion that you must use.\u201d In those moments, it is nice to have my profession properly understood and to receive some recognition for my hidden efforts. Another unknown fact is that because I value my clients\u2019 need for discretion, I readily accept that sometimes it isn\u2019t in my client\u2019s best interest to publicly acknowledge the support that I have provided them. This means for every 5 or 10 public reviews or recommendations that I get, there may be 30 or 40 cases that will never be known. These are the hidden implications of maintaining discretion even after the job is done \u2026 and it\u2019s always worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,
