Sometimes it\u2019s been due to events such as\u00a0the fallout from the niqab debate during the 2015 federal election in Canada. Going further from home, it has involved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/brexit-vote-hate-crime-rise-100-per-cent-england-wales-police-figures-new-racism-eu-a7580516.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hate crimes following Brexit<\/a> in the UK or surrounding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/politics\/2016\/12\/hate_in_america_a_list_of_racism_bigotry_and_abuse_since_the_election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Presidential Election<\/a> in 2016 and the aftermath. For example, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/11\/us\/white-nationalists-rally-charlottesville-virginia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Nationalists&#8217; demonstration in Charlottesville<\/a>, VA or other hate crimes). In all cases, the targeted people, Muslims, immigrants, Blacks, Mexicans, people with disabilities, Jews, and members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/velshi-ruhle\/watch\/-empire-actor-jussie-smollett-attacked-in-chicago-by-men-hurling-homophobic-racial-slurs-1433847875975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LGBTQ+ community<\/a>, have been made to feel inferior and unwelcome. These issues have been awkward to discuss because they have been linked to politics \u2026 and we\u2019ve been conditioned to avoid talking about that subject. The assumption is that it\u2019s impolite (and unwise) to talk about politics or religion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">OK, fine, most of us can agree that politics and religion have no place at work. But what about values? Can we explore our values at work? We won\u2019t acknowledge (or understand\/realize) the fact that some of our colleagues are scared of work-related travel because of the hostility they anticipate. Where does that leave them? When some of our coworkers have their holiday (and\/or work-related) options limited because of travel bans and protests, what\u2019s the hidden impact on them? It was intended as a visible signal or symbol that the person wearing the pin was a safe and kind person. \u201cMore than anything, it\u2019s pro-kindness,\u201d said Sabrina Krebs, 22, a Barnard student from Guatemala City. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say it&#8217;s resistance towards Trump. It\u2019s a form of resistance to hate and to negativity.\u201d The safety pin has been used as a positive visual &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/coded-language-dog-whistle-expressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dog whistle<\/a>&#8221; to represent tolerance and inclusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Individuals and Leaders Set the Tone<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">In my role as an HR Consultant and Career Coach, I often talk about leadership \u2013 and how it\u2019s an important quality regardless of our official job titles. As individuals and as leaders who have responsibility for others, our behaviour\u00a0is an example and it sets a tone. Our pro-social actions create a certain type of work environment and culture. Likewise, <a href=\"http:\/\/msutoday.msu.edu\/news\/2016\/how-incivility-spreads-in-the-workplace\/\">incivility breeds incivility<\/a> and there are negative consequences that hurt productivity and profitability. Nike also announced that they would feature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/09\/06\/meet-the-stars-of-nikes-new-just-do-it-campaign.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6 Changemakers<\/a> in their upcoming campaign. Within days of that announcement, Nike shoes and apparel became a dog whistle of sorts.
