{"id":7484,"date":"2017-11-18T16:32:13","date_gmt":"2017-11-18T21:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/?p=7484"},"modified":"2023-07-03T11:56:23","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T15:56:23","slug":"insider-threats-common-digital-analog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/insider-threats-common-digital-analog\/","title":{"rendered":"Insider threats and data breaches: they&#8217;re not always what you think &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modern-gangster-royal-anwar-366898.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7486\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modern-gangster-royal-anwar-366898-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"insider threats by modern gangster\" width=\"344\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modern-gangster-royal-anwar-366898-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modern-gangster-royal-anwar-366898-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modern-gangster-royal-anwar-366898-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modern-gangster-royal-anwar-366898-1080x1620.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/a>There\u2019s something you should know before you invest your entire IT and information security budget on technical solutions \u2013 if a smart thief wanted to steal your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intellectual_property\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intellectual property<\/a> and\/or your client\u2019s confidential information (e.g., credit, financial, and contact information taken during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/equifax-caa-customers-data-privacy-1.4291140\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Equifax data breach<\/a>), they\u2019d act like a gangster and walk in the front door and take it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Why?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When it comes to protecting what\u2019s worth stealing, it\u2019s your <em>employees<\/em>,\u00a0<em>not your computers<\/em>, that are the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/steveculp\/2016\/05\/10\/cyber-risk-people-are-often-the-weakest-link-in-the-security-chain\/#3d9922442167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weakest link<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Employees are within the human resources (HR) wheelhouse, so this is a topic of great importance to me. Some years ago, I worked in an organization that invested a lot of effort to keep its intellectual property and confidential employee\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">information protected. This was done in two ways: (1) careful hiring and HR processes and (2) technical measures including firewalls, information security protocols, etc. Both approaches were necessary. It hasn\u2019t become a popular concept, as yet, but it\u2019s easy to argue that cybersecurity alone is not enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Many of us have heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/edward-snowden-21262897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Snowdon<\/a>, the former NSA Subcontractor who disclosed an immense volume of confidential information to journalists and online sources. After working in an organization that shares some similarities with the NSA, I think it\u2019s safe to say that the presence of sophisticated technical measures was not enough to prevent the intentional disclosure of confidential information. In fact, this scenario is an example of an <strong>Insider Threat<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em>\u201cInsider threats can be defined as risks posed by rogue employees who deliberately cause harm, or by those who may be negligent in the workplace.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7487\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"insider threats - snowdon a patriot or traitor\" width=\"536\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot-1080x608.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/snowdon-traitor-or-patriot.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Some insider threats are non-malicious or accidental, whereas others are malicious and intentional. Malicious threats may be driven by principles or ideology (e.g., Edward Snowden), or they could be motivated by anger or disenchantment in the workplace. For example, the NSA and Equifax breaches that I just mentioned. Plus, there have been big breaches at Yahoo, Home Depot, Target, and others. I\u2019ve done extensive research on this topic and one thing is crystal clear: <a href=\"http:\/\/securityintelligence.com\/news\/insider-threats-account-for-nearly-75-percent-of-security-breach-incidents\/#.WaRwWQMNzDA.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75% of these data breaches originate inside organizations<\/a>. Often, we don\u2019t hear about the causes of those breaches because they make the organization look terrible. It has a negative impact on the public\u2019s trust and confidence in the organization\u2019s ability to protect corporate information, including clients\u2019 and\/or customers\u2019 personal information. When an organization experiences a security breach, their current and future clients, strategic partners\/affiliates, and members of the general public are likely to see the organization as irresponsible. Negative financial consequences usually follow. Approximately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2016\/10\/23\/small-companies-cyber-attack-out-of-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">60% of smaller companies are bankrupt within 6 months<\/a> of a major security breach, so it\u2019s no wonder this is kept quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How can HR, based on I\/O psychology help?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I\u2019m addressing this topic because I understand that HR has an important role to play in preventing these insider threats. One problem is that most organizations don&#8217;t recognize that HR can make valuable contributions to the risk management process. Another problem is that the C-suite and the IT\/information security folks don\u2019t necessarily recognize the role that HR could be playing to keep confidential intellectual property and client information from leaking out of the organization. For example, many organizations don\u2019t address <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/public-service-workplace-bullying-1.3998012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace bullying<\/a> as proactively or completely as they could. They haven\u2019t understood the link between malicious insider threats that are inspired by anger or a desire for revenge that comes from being severely mistreated at work. The consequences of ongoing suffering in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/phoenix-pressure-pay-centres-close-files-unresolved-pay-issues-1.4395763?cmp=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">toxic workplaces<\/a> are even more severe when essential government services and critical infrastructure are at risk.
