On the other hand, it is a common concern in the workplace, especially when you\u2019re new on the job. The feeling of uncertainty about where you belong in an already established work environment is normal, but sometimes those anxieties can distort what is real, and make you feel unpopular or unwelcome by a new boss even when that isn\u2019t the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/He-loves-me-he-loves-me-not.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7514 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/He-loves-me-he-loves-me-not-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Boss likes you, or not? Flower decision.\" width=\"374\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/He-loves-me-he-loves-me-not-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/He-loves-me-he-loves-me-not-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/He-loves-me-he-loves-me-not.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I recently met with a client who half-joked about wondering if her boss likes her, and that it was similar to the preoccupation she had as a young girl sitting in the grass plucking flower petals to see if a boy she noticed <em>loved<\/em> her or not. She went on to say that not much had changed, because now, even as an accomplished person with a great career, she finds herself surfing the internet to see if there are tell-tale <em>signs<\/em> that her boss doesn\u2019t trust her, doesn\u2019t respect her, doesn\u2019t notice her efforts, or compliment her accomplishments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/someone-reading-magazine-crew-59385.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7517\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/someone-reading-magazine-crew-59385-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"Quizzes about bosses in magazines\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/someone-reading-magazine-crew-59385-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/someone-reading-magazine-crew-59385-768x464.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/someone-reading-magazine-crew-59385-1024x619.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/someone-reading-magazine-crew-59385-1080x653.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She commented that this search for signs was similar to a relationship compatibility quiz that she would have taken from a trendy magazine back in her high school or university days. Of course,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">this comparison was a lighthearted one, which isn\u2019t about being \u201cliked\u201d romantically in the workplace, but after our meeting,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I thought about how often people seek approval in different areas of their life. In childhood, we begin to crave support, attention, and accolades from our parents, teachers, friends, and partners. It\u2019s a prevalent need that grows within us, which is why there are endless surveys, questionnaires, and even foolish games\/quizzes that we play to alleviate our fears of not being \u2018liked.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I\u2019ll admit that there are countless online articles regarding \u201csigns your boss doesn\u2019t like you\u201d but I still thought I\u2019d add my I\/O psychology-tinted voice to the conversation. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sometimes feeling unsure or uncomfortable at work is due to feeling left out or disliked in the workplace. In previous blog posts, I have explored toxic workplace issues including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bullying<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-touches-whole-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harassment<\/a><\/strong>, which are common reasons behind <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/toxic-workplace-should-i-stay-or-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employee resignations<\/a><\/strong>. There are many times, however, when a boss doesn\u2019t have a good relationship with an employee, but it isn\u2019t a toxic work environment, there\u2019s no bullying or harassment. The uncomfortable sense of not being liked by a boss <em>can<\/em> be accidental, and more a matter of perception. Perhaps you\u2019re not standing out as much as you\u2019d like to but that doesn\u2019t automatically mean you are disliked. For more information about workplace harassment which is defined more by the victim&#8217;s perception than the perpetrator&#8217;s intention is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/understand-law-workplace-violence-and-harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Whether intentional or unintentional, a boss\u2019 actions can leave you with many negative or uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. The distinction between bullying behavior in the office and not being favored as much as you might want can be a hard line to distinguish. Yet, the outcome often has the same results, with<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0the employee becoming discouraged and unmotivated \u2026 and eventually checking out on some level &#8212; or even leaving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7542\" style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/not-you-its-me.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7542\" class=\"wp-image-7542\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/not-you-its-me-300x98.png\" alt=\"It's not you, it's me quote\" width=\"377\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/not-you-its-me-300x98.png 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/not-you-its-me.png 636w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7542\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230; or, it could be the way I feel around you &#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">What follows is a short list of scenarios and explanations that an employee might want to consider when trying to understand what may be going on behind the scenes. It may not change their desire to leave their job, but it could relieve some of the personal insecurities they are facing with their employer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>3 ways your boss may be inadvertently making you feel disliked<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1. Micro-managing \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Common complaints I hear from clients include persistent micromanagement from a superior. When we are micromanaged, it can make us feel like we are not trustworthy, competent, or appreciated by the person who\u2019s micromanaging us. Why else would a boss come into your office every hour to check in on your productivity\/progress?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/nested-dolls.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7545\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/nested-dolls-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"set of nested dolls\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/nested-dolls-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/nested-dolls-768x465.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/nested-dolls.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Some potential answers. Maybe the boss has anxiety about their own job security; along with also having to report back to someone else who is micromanaging them. Often bosses have bosses. Imagine the concept of a Matryoshka doll and it&#8217;s tiered<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0and nested system, revealing a set of smaller and smaller figures inside \u2026 this is how most corporations work. So, it isn\u2019t a huge leap to assume that you may not be the driving force behind your boss\u2019 relentless emailing, calling, or hovering presence while you are working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2. Poor interpersonal skills <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Despite the popular belief that those in upper management have great interpersonal skills, some of us know that this isn\u2019t always true. A boss or executive may have other skills that got them rewarded with promotions to higher levels within an organization, but their soft skills (e.,g.,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">emotional intelligence, verbal or written communication) may not be as well-developed. When a supervisor consistently avoids eye contact, is socially awkward, and misreads social cues it isn\u2019t surprising that an employee might interpret their interactions as unfriendly when there could be other reasons. This includes a boss who interrupts or does not listen attentively. Without a doubt, chronic interruptions and not listening <em>is<\/em> usually considered rude, but occasionally this is more about the boss\u2019s inability to focus, or grasp others\u2019 input rather than a personal attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">3. Inaccessibility and feeling overwhelmed <\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Often, a boss or manager has a heavy, multi-layered workload. This can make room for a lot of miscommunication in the workplace, especially when employees don\u2019t see much of their employer. This is the opposite of micromanaging, but it can be just as damaging to the overall morale. When employees don\u2019t get information, updates, or praise, they may feel unappreciated, irrelevant, or worse when the reality is that the boss is scrambling to keep up with their own work. In some cases, employees may eventually feel like the boss is avoiding them or hiding something which can create paranoia and hostility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Our modern workplaces are complicated. Many of us are trying very hard to do much more with much less.
