I\u2019ve also addressed some of the difficulties associated with <strong>hiring staff to work in new fields<\/strong> (read <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/hiring-staff-early-days-blockchain-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a> for an example).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In these brand-new industries<\/span>,<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> it is hard to hire staff because it\u2019s very difficult to determine who has adequate knowledge. For now, it\u2019s not possible to earn a degree or diploma in the cannabis or marijuana\u00a0industry. This means that people who want to hire employees to work in these positions can\u2019t use their usual approach to recruitment and hiring. Degrees and diplomas won\u2019t work as a proxy or symbol of an applicant\u2019s adequate knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/purple-cannabis-esteban-lopez-346906.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7921 \" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/purple-cannabis-esteban-lopez-346906-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Purple cannabis plant\" width=\"340\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/purple-cannabis-esteban-lopez-346906-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/purple-cannabis-esteban-lopez-346906-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/purple-cannabis-esteban-lopez-346906-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/purple-cannabis-esteban-lopez-346906-1080x720.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a>Evaluating job applicants\u2019 relevant cannabis experience and knowledge<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">From what I\u2019ve seen firsthand, many hiring managers and business owners focus on measuring potential employees\u2019 experience and knowledge because these qualities are easier to measure, they\u2019re objective. It\u2019s fairly safe to assume an applicants\u2019 knowledge when they have the appropriate designation, diploma, or degree. In the cannabis industry, this approach probably isn\u2019t going to work in the short-term because you can\u2019t earn degrees in cannabis production, management, or distribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How can an employer predict who is going to be the best performer on the job<\/strong>?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In my experience as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-industrial-organizational-psychology-2795302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Industrial and Organizational (I\/O) Psychologist<\/a>, I\u2019ve always understood that <strong>job performance is based on two factors<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">1) The employees\u2019 experience and knowledge. Stated otherwise, <strong><em>what<\/em> candidates\u2019 know<\/strong>. Often this is categorized as hard skills or technical competence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">2) How an employee <strong><em>applies<\/em><\/strong> <strong>their experience and skills<\/strong> is the second determinant of job performance. This includes qualities like judgment, conscientiousness, creativity, and initiative, etc. For a more detailed discussion of soft skills and their relative importance \u2013 especially when hiring staff, please read this <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/soft-skills-hard-develop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>. In many situations, soft skills play a bigger role than hard skills\/technical skills. When you have one or more people with equivalent knowledge\u00a0(often represented by a specific degree diploma or designation) and similar years of work experience, the person who is better able to apply their knowledge is more successful on the job. They have the stronger, more effective soft skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/safety-deposit-boxes-samuel-zeller-367971.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7923 \" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/safety-deposit-boxes-samuel-zeller-367971-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"valuable cannabis needs to be stored securely\" width=\"283\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/safety-deposit-boxes-samuel-zeller-367971-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/safety-deposit-boxes-samuel-zeller-367971-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/safety-deposit-boxes-samuel-zeller-367971-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/safety-deposit-boxes-samuel-zeller-367971-1080x1620.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a>More complications due to the complicated nature of the cannabis industry<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Typically, when hiring, the employer and\/or hiring manager focuses on the job applicant\u2019s experience and knowledge. From a practical perspective, this makes a lot of sense. It\u2019s straightforward and objective to focus on these measurable qualities. For most people, accurately and reliably evaluating soft skills including qualities like teamwork, cooperation, judgment, flexibility, etc. is often easier said than done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I anticipate that for the first several years of the cannabis industry in Canada it may be difficult to identify the job applicants with the right skill set, knowledge, and experience. It won\u2019t be possible to rely on degrees, diplomas, or certificates as an indicator of knowledge. Although there are some people who have been involved in the legal medicinal cannabis industry for years, that industry is much smaller than the emerging combined recreational and medicinal markets. This means that there will be a bigger demand for staff. In addition, some of the people with experience in the underground, illegal black market might be unsuitable for the new industry. Selling cannabis isn\u2019t the same as selling clothing or groceries or other products. Then, when one factors in the serious <strong>security implications<\/strong> of such valuable merchandise and the high-profile public relations elements, the soft skills will become even more important in these areas than they are in other industries <em>(for a concrete example, watch this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=13RShtpJo6g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> from CBC\u2019s The National which aired on January 15, 2018; at about 4 minutes and 15 seconds, there\u2019s a scene about the vault for drying buds securely)<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The ability to reliably and accurately evaluate these human behaviours will become more and more valuable and more important. Similarly, the cursory background checks and reference checks that are often performed as a formality and an afterthought in many organizations will be completely inadequate in this context.
