What is neurodiversity?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A1.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><em>Neurodiversity<\/em> describes neurological differences that may be familiar, such as attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), being on the autism spectrum and dyslexia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Neurodiversity also includes less commonly known neurological conditions such as dyscalculia, which is difficulty learning or understanding math and other number-related symbols, dysgraphia, difficulty with the ability to hand write or transcribe words on paper, and hypergraphia, a compulsion to write constantly, such as poetry, lists, diaries (see<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/05\/neurodiversity-as-a-competitive-advantage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Neurodiversity as a Competitive Advantage<\/em><\/a><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">, Harvard Business Review, May-June 2017).<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">The incidence of autism in the United States is now one in 42 among boys and one in 189 among girls, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Many of these people are underemployed. I believe that people who are skilled and hardworking should be able to earn a living. But HR departments are not always equipped or trained to recruit and hire the neurodiverse. When and where did the idea of \u201cNeurodiversity\u201d come from? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>A2.<\/strong> \u00a0The term Neurodiversity was coined by an Australian sociologist Judy Singer in 1988 in a thesis paper. In 1998 <strong>Harvey Blume<\/strong> popularized the word in an article in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/1998\/09\/neurodiversity\/305909\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Atlantic<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">. But it\u2019s only come into common use in the past few years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">I love the term. It is an optimistic, nuanced, and progressive way of looking at what was once classified as a mental disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Rather than pathologizing people who think differently, neurodiversity is about accommodating and including people who have different styles of thinking and processing. Even better, it\u2019s about recognizing the unique skills and talents \u2013 assets, in other words, that can be put to work on complex tasks and problems. Those who learn, think or process information differently are\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">not necessarily handicapped. Rather, they should be better integrated into the workforce <em>because<\/em> of their differences &#8212; and the difference that they can make.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Neil-Miliken-quote-on-neurodiversity.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8044 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Neil-Miliken-quote-on-neurodiversity.png\" alt=\"neurodiversity quote by neil milliken\" width=\"320\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Neil-Miliken-quote-on-neurodiversity.png 320w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Neil-Miliken-quote-on-neurodiversity-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>Q3. So, people who were previously labeled \u201cdisabled\u201d can actually be \u201cmore abled\u201d in certain areas? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>A3.<\/strong> Yes. I\u2019d argue that a person on the autism spectrum or otherwise neurologically different should not be viewed as broken, sick, or somehow \u201cincomplete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">Historically, these differently-abled people have been treated differently in schools, at social events, and the workplace.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">Yet a person who is neurologically different only wants to be accepted the same way someone would want to be accepted for their sexual orientation, their race, religion or gender. That is, to be seen as what they are, and not what they aren\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">For example, research shows that autism and dyslexia can bestow special skills sets, such as pattern recognition, memory, and math talents.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">In a former job, for which I interviewed people for highly technical fields like applied physics, advanced applied mathematics, cryptography and engineering, I was almost suspicious when a candidate seemed too conventional.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">So many of the best applicants demonstrated different ways of thinking and processing. Their neurodiversity was the key to their higher-than-average abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>Q4.<\/strong> <strong>We\u2019ve seen genuine changes in the workplace over the past 15 or so years when it comes to gender and racial discrimination in many (or most) organizations. Can the same be said for discrimination against intellectual differences, disabilities or challenges? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>A4.<\/strong> I think we have a long way to go, but the conversation has finally started, and that gives me a reason to be optimistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8045\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia-1024x531.jpg\" alt=\"whoopi goldberg on neurodiversity (dyslexia)\" width=\"490\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia-1024x531.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia-768x398.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia-1080x560.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-dyslexia.jpg 1099w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a>Q5. Do you see movement within the HR profession to revamp their practices when it comes to neurodiversity? What about hidden discrimination in hiring practices?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>A5. <\/strong>Yes. Some organizations are learning how to adapt their hiring processes so that they don\u2019t miss out on these candidates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>\u201cA growing number of prominent companies have reformed their HR processes in order to access neurodiverse talent; among them are SAP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Microsoft, Willis Towers Watson, Ford, and EY. Many others, including Caterpillar, Dell Technologies, Deloitte, IBM, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS, have start-up or exploratory efforts under way.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8211;<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/05\/neurodiversity-as-a-competitive-advantage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neurodiversity as a Competitive Advantage<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In other words, some of these big corporate players are seeing the benefits of hiring and leveraging the abilities of neurodiverse workers.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I\u2019m excited to see the light starting to shine on neurodiversity as a competitive advantage.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In my past work experience, I was able to adapt tests and hiring processes to evaluate relevant behaviours, without creating an adverse impact on people with these types of issues. My focus is always on evaluating relevant work-related behaviours during the hiring process.\u00a0My approach to hiring makes it easier for employers to focus on selecting job applicants who have the qualities that will have the biggest impact in the workplace &#8211; even if the applicants are not neurotypical.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\">I believe that people who are skilled and hardworking should be able to make a living. And I know that is easier said than done. For someone who is seeking work and is not a \u201cneurotypical,\u201d the challenge is ten-fold.
