It showed how much the phone has evolved. Now, many people use their phones for everything except talking. There are a bunch of advantages associated with these versatile devices but there\u2019s also a dark side: a significant number of people physically struggle to talk on the phone. This is having a negative impact on their career progression and their career mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>What is phone anxiety?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us have heard of Social Anxiety, an official disorder that\u2019s found in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(DSM)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who experience social anxiety feel relief when their plans are cancelled. To them, staying in is the new going out (read more about Social Anxiety <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2016\/11\/how-to-get-over-social-anxiety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anxietycanada.com\/articles\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people will assume that phone anxiety is one of those \u2018high-quality first-world problems\u2019 that seems to afflict millennials. The fact is that some non-millennials dislike and dread talking on the phone, too. When combined, the socially anxious, plus the phone-avoidant millennials who grew up using text and email instead of talking on the phone, represents approximately half of the modern workplace*. This means that it\u2019s not some trivial problem;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0it is consequential.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>What\u2019s the d<\/b><b>ifference between worrying and anxiety? <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_137830454_m-2015-woman-talking-and-biting-nails.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8236\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_137830454_m-2015-woman-talking-and-biting-nails.jpg\" alt=\"phone anxiety shows on woman's face\" width=\"442\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_137830454_m-2015-woman-talking-and-biting-nails.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_137830454_m-2015-woman-talking-and-biting-nails-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_137830454_m-2015-woman-talking-and-biting-nails-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although most people use the words worry and anxiety interchangeably, there are a few important and relatable distinctions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worry:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worrying involves our thoughts. We worry about specific things like making it to the train station on time. When we\u2019re worried, it often leads to problem-solving behaviours. For example, students who are worried about their grades will study hard before a test or exam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worry usually happens because of something realistic. For instance, someone who works at a grocery store or bank might be worried about job loss because of ATMs and self-checkout kiosks. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worries tend to be short-term. Worrying doesn\u2019t usually have a negative impact on our professional or personal lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is something that we feel in our bodies e.g. our hearts may race, we may get sweaty, experience muscle tension, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We feel anxious about traveling, which is more vague and general.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone might be anxious about job loss because their boss didn\u2019t ask about their son\u2019s soccer tournament.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s much harder to talk ourselves out of our anxieties since we have much less control over them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety tends to linger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety can make it too difficult to focus and perform effectively at work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For even more information about anxiety, read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/generalized-anxiety-disorder-gad\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-squeaky-wheel\/201603\/10-crucial-differences-between-worry-and-anxiety?amp=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Some people just don\u2019t like talking on the phone, how is that a problem?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people are introverted, but are still extremely effective on the phone and enjoy talking on the phone under the right circumstances. Other people like to speak to others in person but they don\u2019t really enjoy talking on the phone \u2014 but they\u2019ll still do it if and when necessary or beneficial. There are others who avoid talking on the phone because it makes them feel anxious enough that they avoid it at all costs. This phone anxiety and the related avoidance behaviours creates significant problems in their professional and (probably their) social lives. They miss out on worthwhile opportunities or experience negative consequences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One concrete example is one of my clients who I\u2019ll call Jessica. Jessica is doing well at her job except in one domain &#8230; she cannot bring herself to make work-related phone calls. Jessica confided that she\u2019s considering going to HR to ask for an accommodation so that she won\u2019t be expected to make phone calls. My client asked me if that was appropriate and of course, I said, \u201cI recommend that Jessica seek help in for her phone anxiety because this will benefit her in the long-term. It will make her more confident and much more productive. Everybody wins.\u201d So, when phone anxiety becomes a career-limiting or life-limiting obstacle, it\u2019s worth addressing it. Incidentally, Jessica and I are working on building her skills and confidence around phone calls so that her phone anxiety becomes a distant memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Why should phone anxiety matter to organizations?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the surface, phone anxiety may look like a problem that individuals should deal with on their own. In some respects, it\u2019s a life skill that\u2019s worth mastering almost like learning how to cook, swim, or drive. Jobs that require these basic core skills assume that employees can perform them, they don\u2019t expect to teach or develop these skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_186014642_m-2015-young-guy-in-suit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8237 \" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_186014642_m-2015-young-guy-in-suit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_186014642_m-2015-young-guy-in-suit.jpg 667w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Depositphotos_186014642_m-2015-young-guy-in-suit-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/a>The problem is that when you combine the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/workday\/2016\/05\/05\/workforce-2020-what-you-need-to-know-now\/#b73039c2d632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millennials will soon be the largest demographic in the workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and there are also non-millennials who also experience phone anxiety, that\u2019s a huge percentage of the workforce who may be actively avoiding the phone. That\u2019s a major obstacle when in many workplaces, employers are relying on the phone more than ever because it helps reduce travel costs, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeps remote workers connected<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and avoids many of the miscommunications that are caused by detached text, email, and instant messaging. More importantly, when time is short and the stakes are high, the phone is the most effective option when face-to-face isn\u2019t possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globalization means that clients, colleagues, and managers\/executives may be located in different locations.
