Here in Canada, two federal MPs took to Twitter to debate considering versus ignoring the different experiences and obstacles faced by people of colour, people with disabilities, immigrants, LGBTQ+, etc. The Huffington Post\u00a0published a summary of the ongoing feud. It&#8217;s important to note that MP Celina has faced a strong backlash for calling out racism. The athletes\u2019 actions have drawn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/annals-of-appearances\/what-will-taking-the-knee-mean-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intense criticism<\/a>, not to mention outright cursing. Ironically, many do not know that the \u201ctake a knee\u201d movement came from <a href=\"https:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/2018\/05\/colin-kaepernick-national-anthem-kneeling-protest-nate-boyer-memorial-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nate Boyer<\/a> of the Seattle Seahawks. The long snapper is also a former Green Beret. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/news\/heres-how-nate-boyer-got-colin-kaepernick-to-go-from-sitting-to-kneeling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colin Kaepernick<\/strong> asked for his advice<\/a>, Boyer suggested <strong>kneeling as a sign of respect<\/strong> <strong>and protest<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">These high profile, public actions certainly create a buzz. Everyone has an opinion. But what about the smaller, more private spaces in which a person of colour or other minority status navigates on a daily basis. There are whispers in the hallway or the boardroom that are less explicit and less sensational but still leave the person feeling marginalized due to their race. This came to mind as I made my morning coffee and heard yet another race-related headline being reported. In the U.S., two Black men were arrested at a Starbucks, their apparent offence was having the audacity to <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5264380\/starbucks-arrest-black-men-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wait at a table<\/a> for an associate to arrive before purchasing their beverages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I considered Starbucks to be a progressive employer, so I was not surprised when they acted swiftly. They made a public apology and fired the person who had called the police. They also announced they would close down more than 8000 of its shops in the United States to offer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/business\/ct-biz-starbucks-bias-training-20180530-story.html\">racial bias training<\/a>. Similar training took place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2018\/05\/04\/starbucks-canada-to-close-stores-for-sensitivity-training-following-the-arrest-of-two-black-men-at-a-us-location.html\">in Canada on June 11, 2018<\/a>. These actions show some good will even if they won&#8217;t solve the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This sensitivity training comes on the heels of other random and downright bizarre incidents that have recently made the news. At Yale University, police were called because a Black student was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/09\/us\/yale-student-napping-black-trnd\/index.html\">asleep<\/a> in a common room. In Oakland, CA, someone called the police because Black people were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/22\/us\/white-woman-black-people-oakland-bbq-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">having a BBQ<\/a> in a park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/02-colin-kaepernick-time-magazine-1474571784-600x800.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8528\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/02-colin-kaepernick-time-magazine-1474571784-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"Colin Kaepernick takes a knee to protest police brutality fueled by racism\" width=\"238\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/02-colin-kaepernick-time-magazine-1474571784-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/02-colin-kaepernick-time-magazine-1474571784-600x800-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By the time I finished my coffee and turned off the radio I thought about the water cooler conversations that must be happening at universities, NFL franchise locations, government offices and Starbucks shops all over North America. Obviously, the leadership in these organizations are feeling the heat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Is More Sensitivity Training the Answer?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So, here\u2019s the question: even if well-intended, does one day of sensitivity or anti-bias training change the racial discrimination that exists in organizations? The short answer is no. It may even fuel a resentful backlash &#8230; because this is much more complex than just retraining\/educating workers about their \u201cdiverse customer base.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">There is no easy answer. For one thing, this doesn\u2019t begin to address employees who are not white and have been dealing with internal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohrc.on.ca\/en\/racism-and-racial-discrimination-systemic-discrimination-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">systemic discrimination<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Through experience, I know that a quick, sanitized message encouraging employees to \u201cget along and don\u2019t say anything that isn\u2019t politically correct (PC)\u201d clearly does not work. When an organization\u2019s stated versus <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/discuss-values-but-not-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">practiced values<\/a> don\u2019t match, its inconsistency can create more tensions. When the issue isn\u2019t being taken seriously, many people understand the intentional use of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/coded-language-dog-whistle-expressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coded language<\/a> and dog whistle expressions. To them, the issue isn\u2019t about people needing more sensitivity, but rather not\u00a0being racist (or sexist, or homophobic, or transphobic, or Islamophobic, xenophobic, etc.) &#8230; at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>ABC\u2019s Quick Acting Leadership: Will This be the New Normal?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8539\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2-1024x673.jpg\" alt=\"ABC cancels tv show because of racism demonstrated by star actress\" width=\"442\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2-1024x673.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2-768x505.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2-1080x710.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rosanne-Cancellation-May-2018-v2.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As I began writing this blog, my phone pinged again. It was news of ABC\u2019s cancellation of the <strong>rebooted sitcom <em>Roseanne<\/em><\/strong>. Although I\u2019ve seen local leaders act responsibly and prevent sexual harassment and racism from thriving in their workplaces, it\u2019s not something that I\u2019m accustomed to seeing in high-profile organizations. That changed when it only took ABC a few hours to cancel a hit TV show that was generating millions of viewers and dollars. This looked just like we&#8217;ve witnessed in the #MeToo movement with many celebs and politicians being let go despite the financial loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Could this be another watershed moment? To be racially insensitive is starting to mean more than a boardroom meeting and anti-bias training, now it\u2019s been linked to pink slips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Often, I work with clients who feel <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/being-ourselves-vs-covering-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">uncomfortable<\/a> in their place of work. This discomfort is sometimes due to underemployment or a lack of perceived opportunity within their current organization. Sometimes it&#8217;s due to something more sinister like <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sexual harassment<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace bullying<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As much as some people don\u2019t want to admit this is true, these real or perceived limitations are rarely about a lack of education, experience, or skills\/abilities. Often these attitudes and\/or unconscious biases are tied to race, ethnicity, gender, or another characteristic that really shouldn&#8217;t have any bearing on a person\u2019s success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The bottom line,<strong> from an HR perspective<\/strong>: diversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/being-ourselves-vs-covering-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inclusion<\/a> aren\u2019t just hot buzzwords. Given the extremely high cost of replacing a good employee, it&#8217;s worth figuring out ways to create a more inclusive organizational culture that doesn\u2019t cause good people to flee.
