\"Canada<\/a>Canada Day weekend is on the horizon. It\u2019s one of our favourite weekends to cut loose and celebrate our beautiful country and all of its blessings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you go away to a cottage or camping, or you\u2019re in the city for fireworks, Canada Day often involves a lot of drinking and silliness too. If you\u2019re career-minded, this is a good time for a reminder about that dangerous mix that can ruin reputations overnight. Yes, I mean drinking and social media. For responsible adults, drinking and social media don\u2019t mix. Stay mindful of your personal and professional boundaries<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The internet is rich with stories and pictures of social media gone bad \u2013 career ending stories abound. Be judicious with your picture taking if you\u2019re partying. And if you\u2019re partying, wait until morning to decide if you still want to post on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you aren\u2019t sure you can control yourself, or there is someone young and impulsive in your life who might need this kind of tool, there are numerous Android<\/strong><\/a> and iPhone apps to prevent drunk texting, drunk dialling and drunken posts.<\/span><\/p>\n

While we\u2019re on the subject of good times, as Canada moves toward legalizing marijuana, it would be na\u00efve to think that weed can ever mix with work. If you\u2019re in the presence of pot smokers, the same rules apply – no pictures or videos, please.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here are a few more reminders about the good and bad ways to use social media, from a career coach\u2019s perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Quit Your Day Job \u2026 Online<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

If your favourite movies include \u201cOffice Space\u201d and \u201cFight Club,\u201d you\u2019ve probably imagined staging some dramatic quitting scenes of your own. Maybe you\u2019ve been tempted to Tweet the words \u201cResignation Day\u201d and make it real.<\/span><\/p>\n

The thing that is missing from these older movies is the impact that those resignations\u00a0would have in today\u2019s interconnected world. Today, social media makes it easy to quit your job in a way that\u2019s very public and is easily shared far and wide within your industry or profession. This didn\u2019t exist when Jerry McGuire shouted: \u201cWho\u2019s coming with me?!\u201d Social media presents new consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some reminders of some basic rules for talking\u00a0about work-related issues online, from the\u00a0March 2017 post<\/a> about \u201cColin\u2019s last day of work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"Social<\/a>1. Don\u2019t text, Tweet or post about personal issues within your profession unless it\u2019s to promote the business\u00a0or compliment the people you work with or for.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Keep in mind, that if you decide to ignore Rule #1 and share everything online, be prepared that it will be seen indiscriminately. You can\u00a0never predict or manage who will view your status updates.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. If you plan to resign from\u00a0a job and really don\u2019t care what the boss or overall establishment thinks about you, think again. Just because you won\u2019t have to answer to them doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t have connections. They also have the ability to use\u00a0their own social media channels to\u00a0return the not-so-complimentary favour.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Finally, always be classy and humble online, especially when it comes to work-related issues. Even in the most frustrating times where injustices at the office happen daily, stay calm. Try to take deep breaths and think of ways to solve\u00a0this problem tactfully and proactively with real actions and words. Resist\u00a0shouting into a virtual space.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
