I know that for many people, networking is played out; the idea of networking may even inspire eye-rolling, but bear with me. For entrepreneurs, networking done right can lead to new and <strong>better business opportunities and long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/networking-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability<\/a><\/strong>. For employees, networking is important for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/resilience-careers-whats-big-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remaining in the loop<\/a>\u00a0for higher quality employment and promotion opportunities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, it\u2019s clear that some people think it\u2019s better to have a specific type of network. The unstated implication is that the best networks have a certain look to them. In other words, many people assume the best networks include certain types of people &#8212; people who are similar to themselves. Here\u2019s why I believe this is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to multiple, peer-reviewed studies, simply <strong>being in an open network instead of a closed one is the best predictor of career success<\/strong>. Here\u2019s what this means in practice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you\u2019re part of a narrowly focused, closed network, you repeatedly hear the same ideas, which reaffirm what you already know and believe. This is what happens when you build a network that\u2019s full of people who are the same as you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In contrast, when you\u2019re part of a diverse, broad, and open network, you become part of multiple groups. This means that you can have various unique relationships, experiences, and knowledge that other people in closed or narrowly focused groups don\u2019t have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There can be challenges associated with being part of open, broad networks. You can feel like a misunderstood outsider because few people may understand why you think the way you do. But the upsides are amazing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Three Ways to Build a Diverse Network<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Squeezing it in while doing the various parts of your life can build in some diversity. When you consider the activities that you may be involved with through your children\/family, you\u2019ll probably realize that you\u2019ve got more diversity than you expect. I call it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/incidental-networking-busy-people-resilient-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">incidental<\/a>\u201d networking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_106438788_m-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8831\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_106438788_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"diverse networks lead to innovation\" width=\"467\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_106438788_m-2015.jpg 999w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_106438788_m-2015-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_106438788_m-2015-768x505.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/a><strong>2)<\/strong> Try to pursue different hobbies and interests. Odds are that when you interact with people with whom you have shared interests that are outside of your work or business, you\u2019ll develop a more diverse network that includes people who have divergent opinions and perspectives. If you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll meet people with whom you share common ground but who work in different fields\/industries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Finding ways to volunteer to support causes that you care about. The difference between this and #2 from above, is that there\u2019s something inherently different about doing projects\/work, than sports and leisure. The lessons you learn and the insights that you gain may lead to surprising new ways to see things.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice that these suggestions don\u2019t include gender, ethnic, racial, political, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/neurodiversity-questions-answers-ofosu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neurodiverse<\/a>, various physical abilities, or other multiple aspects of diversity \u2013 but I think that all of these layers of diversity are worth integrating into one\u2019s network.
