Let\u2019s face it, while the overdue conversation about mental health has finally started, there is still no easy way to call work and say what you really need is a mental health day or even a mental health week. It\u2019s still pretty hard to call in \u201csad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you did call in \u201csad\u201d you wouldn\u2019t be alone. \u00a0In 2008, the Institute of Health Economics reported that during any given week approximately 500,000 employed Canadians are unable to work due to mental illness (more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.camh.ca\/en\/hospital\/about_camh\/newsroom\/for_reporters\/Pages\/addictionmentalhealthstatistics.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">details and stats<\/a>\u00a0are available).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I have a theory about mental health and how it relates to work. In my experience, many mental health challenges are <em>symptoms<\/em> of genuine workplace problems. In other words, the disability is legitimate and real, but the root cause is not completely psychological or medical, it&#8217;s more circumstantial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">From my experience as a career coach and psychologist, at least 30 percent of my clients who have taken long-term disability leave are legitimately suffering from anxiety, depression, burnout, or related issues. What\u2019s troubling is these problems are often\u00a0symptoms of what\u2019s happening to them at work.\u00a0In other words, there is some issue within their work environment. A difficult boss; a difficult co-worker or a lack of support or proper tools to do a job. In some cases, they are in a position or on a career path that is unsuitable for them. Sometimes there\u2019s a poor match between the person and the management style or organizational culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In other cases, there are serious interpersonal problems at play, such as actual <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bullying<\/a><\/u>\u00a0or\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harassment<\/a><\/u>. When someone is in a role or environment that is a poor match for them, over time, the stress of it can contribute to burnout or other <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/qa-io-vs-clinical-psychology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psycho-emotional consequences<\/a><\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI went from one federal government department to another and I experienced total culture shock,\u201d says my client \u201cJane\u201d from some of my earlier posts. \u201cI went from working on small teams with managers a few doors away, to working within a team of hundreds, reporting to remote team leaders and a manager I never met in the three years I was there. I didn\u2019t adjust well to the impersonal culture. When I had a problem or question, there was no clear structure for finding what I needed to know. I felt like a number, and I felt lost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/daniela-cuevas-29107-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8736\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/daniela-cuevas-29107-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"mental health challenges make some people call in sad to avoid work problems\" width=\"495\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/daniela-cuevas-29107-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/daniela-cuevas-29107-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/daniela-cuevas-29107-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/daniela-cuevas-29107-unsplash-1080x720.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The bad fit took its toll. \u201cI found it harder and harder to force myself to go to work. I\u2019d feel physically ill when I got to the door in the morning. I started calling in sick for a day here and there, but I wasn\u2019t sick. I was sitting in one place, sometimes my car, for hours, often crying, and not being able to figure out what to do.\u201d Jane ended up on short-term disability for several weeks. \u201cStress leave felt awful. I felt like a failure. I couldn\u2019t handle my job; everyone else could handle it, so why couldn\u2019t I?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What\u2019s the Solution?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When the thought of returning to work triggers considerable anxiety and\/or depression, that\u2019s when\u00a0nuanced and strategic career coaching\u00a0becomes especially relevant. It is at this crossroads that clients realize that they need to figure out a different way forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If Jane had come to me back then, for example, I would have helped her figure out that the problem wasn\u2019t her, but that she had landed in the wrong job, and she needed to find a way out before things got to the point of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/burnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">burnout<\/a> and a disability claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Mental Health and Related Services that Can Help<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">That said, these are very delicate situations that deserve the skill and attention of a competent advisor. Most family doctors and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)\u00a0providers have never heard of <em>\u201cCareer Psychology,\u201d<\/em> which is the brand of career coaching that I offer based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Industrial_and_organizational_psychology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Industrial \/ Organizational Psychology<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ben-white-131241-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8737\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ben-white-131241-unsplash-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"mental health can improve after a break or a rest\" width=\"472\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ben-white-131241-unsplash-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ben-white-131241-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ben-white-131241-unsplash-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ben-white-131241-unsplash-1080x721.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/a>Family doctors and EAPs sometimes suggest clinical psychology, psychotherapy, or psychiatry interventions to\u00a0help deal with the mental health symptoms, but that\u2019s an approach that only addresses part of the problem &#8212; the psychological symptoms &#8212; without addressing the root cause, which may actually be someone is in the wrong job or the wrong organization. I believe it&#8217;s imperative that we develop graceful, sustainable, and cost-effective exit strategies.
