Often, it\u2019s taken the form of sexual harassment of women by men \u2026 but according to a recent study, it\u2019s often garden-variety harassment of women <em>by other women<\/em>. In fact, according to this recent <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/4411507\/women-workplace-bullying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>, <strong>two-thirds of women have been bullied by another woman at work<\/strong>. Some of this may be related to the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_bee_syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queen Bee Syndrome<\/a>&#8221; which is well known among teenage girls, or the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mean_Girls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mean Girls<\/a>.\u00a0 Maybe this is a downside of gender equity, women are at least as guilty of bad workplace behaviour as their male counterparts are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Unfortunately, I\u2019ve seen <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-harassment-enabled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">evidence of female bullies<\/a> in businesses, government, and non-profit organizations. It is agonizing to live through as the victim \u2013 or hear about after the fact. Whatever the context, workplace bullying exists when someone with more privilege and power harasses someone with less privilege and power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Bad behaviour spreads<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This type of bad behaviour is terrible in its own right. What\u2019s even worse is that by accepting this type of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrzone.com\/perform\/people\/what-is-workplace-incivility-why-should-we-care-and-what-should-we-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">incivility<\/a> and workplace\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccohs.ca\/oshanswers\/psychosocial\/bullying.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bullying\/harassment<\/a>\u00a0in an organization it encourages it to spread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I understand that there are many factors that encourage people to keep quiet or look away in the presence of bullying or harassment. For example, this protects the reputations of the victims who do not want to be labelled\u00a0as trouble-makers. In other situations, it\u2019s easier for a business owner, leader, or HR person to let the victim give up and leave the organization than it is to reign in the bully\/harasser. In other cases, the silence and indifference are mostly about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/complicity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complicity<\/a>\u00a0of the witness(es) who could and should have been better allies. Their silence in the face of harassment and the abuse of power isn\u2019t something to be proud of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The updated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.labour.gov.on.ca\/english\/hs\/topics\/workplaceviolence.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ontario anti-harassment legislation<\/a>\u00a0does offer some guidance and relief to the people who are brave and motivated enough to try to make the workplace safer and fairer<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>All that glitters is not gold<\/strong><strong> \u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_13728001_m-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8904 \" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_13728001_m-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Queen Bee can fool you\" width=\"322\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_13728001_m-2015.jpg 862w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_13728001_m-2015-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Depositphotos_13728001_m-2015-768x891.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/><\/a>Ironically, I have seen situations where a female bully has talked the talk but didn\u2019t walk the walk. For example, a female bully may say things or take positions that make them seem like supporters of gender equality or feminism. For instance, they said the \u2018right\u2019 things during the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/ashley-csanady-policing-ghomeshis-lawyers-feminism-serves-only-to-undermine-feminisms-true-aim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jian Ghomeshi trial<\/a>, they attend annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/About\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a>\u00a0events, or confess that they have experienced problems associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/zontaeclubcanada.org\/sexual-harassment-womens-issues-are-hr-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#MeToo movement<\/a>. It\u2019s extremely disappointing to see those women who outwardly speak of being allies who are fighting to end violence against women perpetrating emotional violence against another woman. It\u2019s also more complicated to hold these women to account because of the mismatch between their words and their actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So, in the interest of gender equality, it\u2019s time for <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-dad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men<\/a>\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0women to consider doing more to create safe, respectful and inclusive organizations and organizational cultures. Men aren\u2019t the only ones who should be expected to be good organizational citizens.
