Dreadful news headlines about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high profile bad behaviour<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0divisive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/discuss-values-but-not-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">politics<\/a>.\u00a0 While that&#8217;s all true and legitimate, most of us don\u2019t get a pass when we lose our cool. This is partially because I\u2019ve been watching the commentary about tennis players who have expressed their temper on the court \u2013 and the fallout that accompanies that behaviour. Watch this video that I spotted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rebelgirls\/videos\/244054996306766\/?hc_ref=ARS7QEEQqQpGKrJcXvpDcNDadrSb-5DuM9yol242c1q66zJuG65C9Lo1w-HlNO5oKhw&amp;__xts__%5b0%5d=68.ARAwoWUu-SIlwE-GuuUzgFkttgd47xqgqZPoEd6YgSQbkyXYS-El0NN7uXl9M6WrHmTC7Lkf8pF-InIL803pSOevezJI_XpCWZqEjB7EGpWnRgaouq2BePEARnfg9tr6JN-jeGXU1muPth0t2wCDgJsAuT977GcNsZcKQLfO6vyT8ra8n3opRw&amp;__tn__=kCH-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, or this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6EP4pYV-jak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Top Ten tennis outbursts<\/a> video from YouTube to see exactly what I mean about this particular variety of \u2018workplace\u2019 behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>With behaviour, context often matters. This includes how our current behaviour compares with our past behaviour. For example, if you\u2019re normally a reasonable, even-tempered person then one meltdown or tantrum will really stick out. People will remember it. As the saying goes, you can\u2019t put lava back into a volcano. In these situations, the best thing to do is to offer a sincere apology \u2013 quickly and in front of the people who may have watched you lose your temper. Try to take responsibility instead of blaming the person who was at the receiving end of your freak-out. For good measure, it\u2019s also wise to offer the same acknowledgement of wrongdoing to your supervisor\/boss.<\/p>\n<p>Certain positive traits are associated with being quick to anger \u2014 these traits include intensity, a naturally competitive nature and a strong drive for achievement and excellence. Rage or anger can be a natural manifestation of passion. If you\u2019ve already cultivated a reputation for being a high strung, high-intensity person then you may have a bit more latitude. People are used to you acting a little more <em>extra<\/em>ordinary. With that said, it\u2019s one thing to be known for being loud, passionate and having a high standard of excellence. Most people will accept that as part of your style. Those traits are never an excuse for having bad manners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-skeet-531298-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8871\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-skeet-531298-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Losing your temper at work often leads to regret\" width=\"498\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-skeet-531298-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-skeet-531298-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-skeet-531298-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-skeet-531298-unsplash-1080x720.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a>Being intense and having high expectations are OK but crossing the fine line into abusive, threatening behaviour or personal attacks will hurt your credibility as someone who wants the best performance from yourself and others.\u00a0Moreover, it may result in accusations of <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-harassment-enabled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harassment<\/a> and difficult conversations with HR and even \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.labour.gov.on.ca\/english\/hs\/topics\/workplaceviolence.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Legal<\/a>.\u2019 Even if you&#8217;re known for being intense, if you lose control of yourself and have a tantrum of any sort, then you really should apologize to anyone who may have seen it or been affected by it as soon as possible. For good measure, even if people know that you&#8217;re &#8216;prickly&#8217;, make sure to apologize to your supervisor\/boss and let them know that this won\u2019t become a habit. If your boss\/supervisor chooses to discipline you in some way because of your bad behaviour and this makes you even angrier then that might be a sign that you should consider speaking with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/comparing-mental-health-specialists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychologist or psychotherapist<\/a> to help you develop better strategies for handling your volatile emotions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, hindsight is 20\/20. So, learn from others who\u2019ve behaved regrettably at work. Here are a few <strong>strategies to consider <em>before<\/em> you lose your temper at work<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do your homework before potentially difficult interactions. Make notes that include the key points you need to cover. This should help you to stay on track.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s no harm in practicing what you need to say. This may help you to stay &#8216;on script&#8217; instead of unleashing a string of regrettable words.<\/li>\n<li>Consider postponing a meeting or discussion if you know that you\u2019re unlikely to be able to maintain your composure and professionalism <em>(of course, you do need to deal with it, this isn\u2019t meant to be a way of avoiding to do your job \u2026)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have HR or career-related matters that you\u2019d like to discuss?
