The digital world allows us to stay plugged in 24\/7 with just about anyone \u2026 anywhere. In our personal and professional lives, the presence of social media and cell phones means you can easily track down a friend, a date, a family member or colleague within seconds. Yet, despite all this interconnectedness, we are suddenly experiencing the phenomenon of being \u201cghosted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In previous blogs I have compared workplace troubles with the issues we may face in our romantic lives (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/dear-dr-helen-advice-ideal-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Career Matchmaking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/career-relocation-happily-ever-after-considerations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abandoning our careers to relocate<\/a>). In this article, I\u2019ll address a new phenomenon that started in the personal realm but has now crossed over into the professional realm \u2013 Ghosting.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does \u2018being ghosted\u2019 or having someone ghost you look like \u2026 or rather feel like?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Being Stood Up<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps when you think of someone being stood up you imagine a person anxiously sitting in a restaurant alone while eyeing the door, then their watch, then the door again. That\u2019s what being stood up looked like back in the day. I\u2019m sure it\u2019s similar today with exception of the cell phone being glued to the stood-up person\u2019s hand, eyes transfixed, waiting for a replied text that never comes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9317\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ghosting - the person leaves and never comes back\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/jordan-jensen-352775-unsplash-1080x1080.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Now how does this translate in the workplace? According to many of my associates, the same thing can happen to a hiring manager or business owner as they sit in their office waiting for the interviewee to show up \u2026 but who never does. They email, call and even text this person in the hopes they are just running late or perhaps they got the time of interview mixed up, yet there is still no response. Sometimes the interviewee has already met with them but somehow decides not to show up for the actual job interview \u2013 or if they attended the interview, they may agree to take the job but never show up for work.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The Rude Breakup<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ghosting doesn\u2019t always occur with a new and unknown love interest or a talented job candidate, sometimes it can happen after months or years of an established relationship. This is when ghosting becomes personal regardless of whether it happens to a romantic partner, friend, co-worker, or employer. Regardless of the context, the effects of being ghosted are still as shocking and potentially damaging. I have heard from employers that this \u201cghosting\u201d often seems to happen after there has been a long weekend, vacation, or holiday break. Unexpectedly, a few employees just don\u2019t come back, not even to collect their personal items left on their cubicle desk. They don\u2019t reply to emails or calls. Others have described an employee getting up to grab a coffee at a caf\u00e9 and poof they don\u2019t return. This kind of action cannot even remotely be described as an offensive break up or disrespectful quitting because even those imply there were some words exchanged between two people. For instance, I\u2019ve done a two-part series on \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/corporate-psychopaths-wolves-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corporate Psychopaths<\/a>\u2019 who act like <em>wolves<\/em> in the workplace. I\u2019ve written about <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace bullying<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sexual harassment<\/a>, and even female bullies (the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/queen-bee-syndrome-female-bullying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queen Bee Syndrome<\/a>). Even if rarely discussed openly in most workplaces, many workplaces are unpleasant \u2026 so it\u2019s no wonder some people ghost. They probably look at it as a clean getaway. Some victims of bad office behaviour don\u2019t care about burning bridges, they\u2019d prefer to burn down those bridges and never look back (or be followed &#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>There may, however, be another explanation. Despite years of minimal growth in incomes, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Credentialism_and_educational_inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">academic inflation<\/a>, and downsizing due to automation, outsourcing, and globalization, for some roles, there aren\u2019t enough employees to fill the vacancies. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/amp\/1.4973213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">labour shortage<\/a> puts more power into the hands of employees.
