It\u2019s been promoted as the main reason why employees choose to stay productive within certain organizations. Engaged employees drive productivity and revenue growth in those organizations. Although that idea served organizations well for the past 20 years or so, according to a new whitepaper sponsored by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) the new competitive advantage appears to be employee fulfillment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3048751\/happy-employees-are-12-more-productive-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Happy employees are 12% more productive<\/a>, and unhappy employees are 10% less productive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does this matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many employers have been able to pick and choose which employees to hire \u2026 and they could get away with not treating them especially well (e.g., long hours, flat incomes, dreadful corporate cultures). Demographic factors will probably change things in favour of employees, even though <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/automation-happening-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automation<\/a> may offset this to some extent. This shift in the economy may make employee fulfillment much more important.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/javier-reyes-599328-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9264 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/javier-reyes-599328-unsplash-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"employee fulfillment will drive recruitment and retention\" width=\"251\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/javier-reyes-599328-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/javier-reyes-599328-unsplash-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/javier-reyes-599328-unsplash-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/javier-reyes-599328-unsplash-1080x1620.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a>Millennials are known for preferring to buy from and work for organizations that do work that is consistent with their values. This matters because <a href=\"https:\/\/dynamicsignal.com\/2018\/10\/09\/key-statistics-millennials-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">millennials became the biggest generation<\/a> in the labour force in 2016. As they climb the corporate ladder and gain influence, this will become even more important. These employees are looking for more from their work experience. They are seeking employment that is meaningful and provides some personal fulfillment. They prefer to work in organizations where they have a chance to develop and develop authentic relationships.<\/p>\n<p>In concrete terms, this means workplaces with the following characteristics will become even more desirable:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Opportunities to learn and develop on the job<\/li>\n<li>Access to training, mentorship, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/career-advice-professionals-nuanced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coaching<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Real opportunities for career development and progression<\/li>\n<li>Flexible hours and\/or the ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/working-from-home-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work from home<\/a> periodically<\/li>\n<li>Work environments that are free from <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-bullying-a-hidden-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bullying<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/sexual-harassment-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harassment<\/a>, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/toxic-workplace-should-i-stay-or-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">toxic behaviours<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Workplaces that are <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/being-ourselves-vs-covering-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inclusive<\/a> and where <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/coded-language-dog-whistle-expressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">implicit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/workplace-racism-watershed-moment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explicit discrimination<\/a> isn\u2019t tolerated because the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/discuss-values-but-not-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated and practiced values match<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Depositphotos_63349479_m-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9270 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Depositphotos_63349479_m-2015-300x256.jpg\" alt=\"employee fulfillment will matter in the purpose economy\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Depositphotos_63349479_m-2015-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Depositphotos_63349479_m-2015-768x657.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Depositphotos_63349479_m-2015.jpg 999w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Currently, and in the recent past, the <em>information or<\/em> <em>knowledge economy<\/em> was the focus, where employees were the source of wealth creation. Corporate innovation came from knowledge, and the main priority was to benefit from employees\u2019 talent and keep them engaged to maximize their output and corporate profits. In the emerging <strong><em>purpose economy<\/em><\/strong>, a sense of meaning and purpose in work are the main sources of innovation. There\u2019s more attention on humanizing work, and prioritizing psychological safety where people can bring their whole selves to work rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/being-ourselves-vs-covering-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">covering up core aspects of themselves<\/a>. In the purpose economy, it\u2019s easy to anticipate that there should be less tolerance of high performing yet <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/corporate-psychopaths-wolves-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">toxic employees and leaders<\/a> who create conflict and ongoing turmoil.
