These are clients who are taking on challenging new roles or opportunities. In those situations, I always count on sharing some fundamentals that I learned in graduate school about learning and motivation. This material is now part of Psychologist Carol Dweck&#8217;s more recent work on learning or growth mindsets.<\/p>\n<p>New roles often feel like high stakes situations. Failure isn\u2019t a desirable outcome. To make things more complicated, some people also struggle with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/impostor-syndrome-how-it-makes-you-feel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Impostor Syndrome<\/a> during the early phases of their new roles. Yet, somehow, others are not bothered much even though their roles are just as difficult.<\/p>\n<p>This begs the questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do some people succeed when others don\u2019t?<\/li>\n<li>What elements are within our control to help foster our success?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although her work is not without controversy, in my experience, Dweck\u2019s theory of the two mindsets and the difference that they make in outcomes is incredibly powerful and useful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_160108806_s-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9374\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_160108806_s-2015.jpg\" alt=\"fixed mindset has downsides\" width=\"377\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_160108806_s-2015.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_160108806_s-2015-300x293.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIn a <strong>fixed mindset<\/strong>, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them.\u201d This mindset implies that since \u201cyou only have a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality [or leadership style], then you\u2019d better prove that you have a healthy dose of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d argue that sheer intelligence or talent can only get you so far.\u00a0I\u2019d also argue that anecdotally, this mentality may inspire arrogance fueled by overcompensation.<\/p>\n<p>In the fixed mindset, &#8220;Every situation calls for a confirmation of [one&#8217;s] intelligence, personality, or character. Every situation is evaluated: Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or dumb? Will I be accepted or rejected? Will I feel like a winner or a loser?&#8221; That\u2019s an awful lot of pressure. It\u2019s also a big mental or cognitive drain away from doing one\u2019s actual work. Sadly, when this mindset is the predominant one that&#8217;s shared by people within an organization, it may contribute to a workplace\u00a0culture or climate that misses many opportunities for innovation, creativity, inclusion, and calculated risk-taking.<\/p>\n<p>The fixed mindset is also consistent with the &#8216;talent management&#8217; movement and organizations where &#8216;<em>talented<\/em>&#8216; people are given the most interesting assignments, clients, and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_109706384_s-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9375\" src=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_109706384_s-2015.jpg\" alt=\"growth mindset has advantages\" width=\"312\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_109706384_s-2015.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_109706384_s-2015-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ioadvisory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Depositphotos_109706384_s-2015-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/a>In contrast, the <strong>growth mindset<\/strong> creates a powerful passion for learning and development. \u201cIn a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work\u2014brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When we see ourselves as capable works-in-progress who will continue to improve over time, it\u2019s easier to avoid being paralyzed by the impostor syndrome when we are trying challenging new things.
