Are Nerves Ruining Your Job Interviews?

Nerves Getting in Your Way?

A while back I wrote about job interview techniques for nervous job candidates. While those approaches will work for most people who get nervous prior to job interviews or other high-stakes situations there are some people who need more support. If you’re one of those people then this blog post is for you. If you know one of those people, do them a solid and share this with them.

Concrete Strategies to Help You Prepare and Succeed

Those of you who know me know that I have an extensive network of people who I work with professionally. By extension, this network is available to my clients. For example, in some cases, clinical psychologists are working with my clients to develop strategies around self-esteem, anxiety, and/or depression using psychology as the foundation for those interventions. In other cases, my clients like to work with Naturopathic Doctors like Vivienne Guy, ND at Sunrise Wellness Centre who can offer treatments like acupuncture or supplements to help them manage their stress-related hormones and remain relaxed enough that their performance is not hindered by their anxiety.

Both of these approaches, namely clinical psychology and naturopathic medicine, are effective. Often it comes down to the amount of lead time a client has prior to their interview or other high stakes event and the clients’ preferences. One clear advantage of working with the naturopathic doctor is that the interventions can be very fast-acting. When you have one to two weeks’ notice, acupuncture and/or supplements are good options since they leave you feeling calm and equally important, clear-headed. These (nearly) immediate results makes it a very appealing choice in situations where my clients need to calm themselves down quickly so they can perform well at an upcoming job interview, exam, or evaluation that’s part of the pre-employment assessment.

Can Your Diet Affect Your Mood and Performance?

Dr. Guy knows that for some people, caffeine can trigger symptoms of anxiety. Consequently, she recommends choosing green tea instead of coffee on the day of your interview and possibly also on the days leading up to the interview or other challenges. While we work together on practice interviews etc, you can also pre-test the naturopathic interventions. This two-pronged, integrated approach means that you’ll be confident that on the day of your interview you will perform at your peak. There are many instances where a more comprehensive approach will work better for long term management of stress and chronic anxiety but that’s the topic of another blog post (or you can contact me offline).

What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

Inexperienced leaders must recognize the difference between playing the “character” of what they think a leader should be and what authentic leadership is. This requires self-reflection and intentionally developing a genuine leadership style based on their own strengths, values, and a keen understanding of the team’s dynamics. Otherwise, their approach will seem hollow or one-sided and come across as inauthentic.

Exploring the Consequences of Microaggressions in the Workplace

During past training sessions, I’ve provided empirical and concrete examples of how discrimination and microaggressions can hurt more than the intended victims. Here, I’ll share one clear example, inspired by a recent TV interview, of how microaggressions and chronic mistreatment can impair retention and hurt the majority.
