A Message From Dr. Helen
Many people have New Year’s resolutions that involve health and wellness. Often, this includes work-life balance so that there’s enough time to take care of ourselves. Now that it’s 2020, and I have a kid starting university in the Fall, perspective, hindsight, and taking the long view of work-life balance feels especially relevant. For me, this means certain months where I’ll work much more than usual to offset the months when I’ll be working less and will be preoccupied with personal things including driver’s ed, my son’s final decision on which school to attend, graduation, and possibly a move. I hope you enjoy the first 2020 edition of “You Heard It Here!”

Working through addiction… while at work
Statistics show that slightly over one in five people will meet the criteria for a substance use disorder. This means that most of us will work with someone who is dealing with an addiction. Despite the prevalence of addictions, it’s not a topic that’s usually discussed freely in the workplace. READ MORE
Avoiding an online job scam – how to tell when an opportunity is legitimate
You may have heard the term ‘catfish’ which describes an online love interest who is claiming to be someone who they are not. In many respects, this analogy applies to online job scams that look plausible on the surface. The fact is that these fraudulent opportunities exist, and unsuspecting job seekers should beware. Online romantic and job scams are on the rise since the perpetrators have so much to gain. Moreover, not all of us can recognize a scammer from behind our computer screens. READ MORE
Career Psychology – How it’s different (and a lot faster) than therapy
Since my PhD is in Psychology, many people assume that they’ll need to work with me for months at a time before they can see real results. In addition, they assume that career-related services will be beyond their budget. Thankfully, that’s not usually true. Sometimes, impactful and sophisticated guidance and support can be accomplished within hours or days of working with a client. READ MORE
WHAT’S NEW?
Canadian Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jean-Yves Duclos was in Montreal to express support for projects like a National Institute for Black Canadians. (Photo: Scott Prouse/CTV Montreal) In January 2018, Prime Minister Trudeau, on behalf of the Government of Canada, endorsed the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent, thereby committing to address the UN’s 2017 recommendations to improve the condition of people who identify as Black and/or of African descent in Canada. As part of those efforts, I was instrumental in drafting the proposal that’s leading to the creation of a national think tank that will address issues including employment, entrepreneurship, health, justice and policing, etc. from the Black perspective. This will be parallel to the gender-based analyses that the federal government conducts. Read more.

Article: How to make (and keep) a new year’s resolution It’s still early in the year so many of us are trying to establish new habits linked to our New Year’s resolutions. Here’s a NY Times article that includes some tactics for setting and reaching goals. Read the full article on NY Times.
Podcast: Lessons Learned with Komal Last winter I had the pleasure of being a guest on Thrive, a podcast for women entrepreneurs where I spoke with host Komal Minhas about wellness, inclusion, and how to care for yourself as well as your employees (In case you missed it, here’s the link). Since then, Komal has started her own podcast called “Lessons Learned with Komal.” Episodes are a mix of interviews and personal reflections with Komal. One episode I especially enjoyed was one where she explained how she created the opportunity to interview Michelle Obama in Ottawa. I attended the Obama event and related to the themes they discussed on many levels. As a bonus, I now have only one degree of separation from Michelle Obama!
