March – It’s not just a month it’s a movement …

March is an exciting month, full of change and hope. In our part of the world, it is the beginning of spring and the return of a warmer sun. It’s also the month when International Women’s Day occurs. This year, there’s an important movement that is asking all people to #BeBoldForChange and “to help forge a better working world.”  On this note, I really want the month of March to work for you.

Let’s start by talking about change … the good, the bad and the inevitable. With massive change underway in the US and the UK (pending the implementation of Brexit) it may seem almost like something you felt as a child when a punitive principal replaced a much kinder one – Read More –

Does family have any business being in your workplace?

In certain countries and family-oriented cultures, there’s a tendency to hire and promote people whom the boss knows and trusts. When the goal is to produce a successful family business this makes a lot of sense but there’s more to the nepotism than not just choosing ‘outsiders’. – Read More

Two Weeks Notice and Working Girl … what do these two romantic comedies have in common, other than the happily-ever-after theme? For any Rom-Com movie lover, the answer is obvious … they both take place in the office. – Read More

News and Notes: In February, I spoke to a group of civilians and military members at the Department of National Defense (DND) about Using HR and Psychology to Prevent Insider Threats.   With the end of the fiscal year approaching in many organizations, I have been helping employers and employees set meaningful and proactive goals as part of their performance management planning. In addition, employees who have workplace budgets for professional development have been using those funds to receive Career Coaching from I/O Advisory Services.   For the past few years, I have been an active member of a Human Rights organization called Zonta International. Recently, I transferred my membership to the new Zonta eClub of Canada and I’m now the Vice President. Zontians in the Ottawa area have been working closely with a group of young men, called ManUp, who are determined to be effective bystanders who can help end violence against women. This work has been done in collaboration with the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women (OCTEVAW) and the Ottawa RedBlacks.

What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

Inexperienced leaders must recognize the difference between playing the “character” of what they think a leader should be and what authentic leadership is. This requires self-reflection and intentionally developing a genuine leadership style based on their own strengths, values, and a keen understanding of the team’s dynamics. Otherwise, their approach will seem hollow or one-sided and come across as inauthentic.

Including Gen Z, four generations in the workplace. What’s the secret to making it work?

In today’s dynamic workplace, organizations are navigating a unique era in which the workforce spans four distinct generations Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, to the emerging Generation Z or “Gen-Z.” With each generation bringing its own set of values, skills, and work styles to the table, building an effective, cohesive multigenerational team presents opportunities and challenges.

Exploring the Consequences of Microaggressions in the Workplace

Exploring the Consequences of Microaggressions in the Workplace

During past training sessions, I’ve provided empirical and concrete examples of how discrimination and microaggressions can hurt more than the intended victims. Here, I’ll share one clear example, inspired by a recent TV interview, of how microaggressions and chronic mistreatment can impair retention and hurt the majority.
