A Message From Dr. Helen

A few years ago, a friend with children older than my son said to me: when your kids are young, the days are long, but the years are short. That expression has really stayed with me and it seems to apply to our current times.

For so many of us, there’s so much going on that each day feels extremely long, but the weeks and months are flying by. This month marks my 8-year anniversary in business! I am super grateful to have made it this long, especially given the obstacles that I’ve had to navigate over the past years. It’s been a fascinating journey full of ups and downs, and many extraordinary clients and collaborators. Here’s to many more!

Pandemic-Induced (Socially) Awkward Communication in the Workplace

For the past months, most of my personal and professional interactions have been 2-dimensional. I’ve noticed that on the rare occasions when I’ve seen people in real life, I’ve felt way more awkward than usual. When I’ve compared notes, it seems that others are feeling it too.  READ MORE

Hiring for Best Fit, Without Bias

DR. HELEN’S PICKS Video: How to Build Your Resilience For over seven years, my tagline has been “Building Resilient Careers and Organizations.” This means that for me, resilience isn’t a buzzword that I jumped on in 2020. Since we seem to need resilience more than ever, I’m sharing this 4-minute video that may help you make small changes that will help you improve your resilience.

Podcast: Managing Burnout As a psychologist, I’ve been receiving links to research and other resources that predicts a lot of pressure on our collective mental health during 2020 and 2021. One area that’s getting a lot of attention is burnout since many people are living with circumstances that put them at higher risk for burning out. In the summer I found this podcast episode which is highly informative — I’d recommend having a listen.

The dread of potential downsizing looms over many workplaces, particularly in volatile times. Whether driven by economic downturns, technological changes, or strategic shifts, organizations may need to reduce their workforce to survive while remaining operational. What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

Inexperienced leaders must recognize the difference between playing the “character” of what they think a leader should be and what authentic leadership is. This requires self-reflection and intentionally developing a genuine leadership style based on their own strengths, values, and a keen understanding of the team’s dynamics. Otherwise, their approach will seem hollow or one-sided and come across as inauthentic.

Including Gen Z, four generations in the workplace. What’s the secret to making it work?

In today’s dynamic workplace, organizations are navigating a unique era in which the workforce spans four distinct generations Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, to the emerging Generation Z or “Gen-Z.” With each generation bringing its own set of values, skills, and work styles to the table, building an effective, cohesive multigenerational team presents opportunities and challenges.

Exploring the Consequences of Microaggressions in the Workplace

Exploring the Consequences of Microaggressions in the Workplace

During past training sessions, I’ve provided empirical and concrete examples of how discrimination and microaggressions can hurt more than the intended victims.
