Summer is You Time. Relax and Recharge (but Don’t Relax your Standards!)

With Canada Day behind us and the official “holiday season” in full swing, it seems like a good time to remind ourselves that it’s always a good career move to be cognizant of one’s image on social media. The carefree, relaxed days of summer shouldn’t mean you relax your standards. In other words, when the beer comes out, put your phone away, and especially stay off Twitter and Instagram. Partying and selfies just don’t mix. In fact, there are some very effective apps that will lock up your phone and social media if you’re planning to party. If you’re past that stage, maybe you can share these links to Android and iOS/Apple apps with the younger people in your life who aren’t.   Read more about the funny/not-so-funny-when-it’s-you implications of mixing social media with partying here.  On a related note, here’s an interesting article from Workopolis about job searching and your image, literally, on social media. These days your performance outside of work counts too These days your behaviour outside of work counts too. Here are some people whose careers were killed by bad behaviour — not necessarily at work. You may remember that guy who threw a can of beer onto the baseball field at a Toronto Blue Jays game a while back. He was charged with mischief and he lost his job. For some infamous examples of careers that were ended by carelessness and/or bad judgement, read about Justine Sacco, Anthony Weiner or Scott Bartosiewicz. More recently, there’s Rosanne Barr who tried to claim that the sedative Ambien made her do it. Her careless tweet cost her a TV show.

Have you ever wondered…? What’s the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a psychotherapist and a life coach?

Read this fascinating guest blog by Ottawa psychologist Dr. Barbara Virley, C. Psych. to find out.  Take advantage of the summertime slow-down There are certain industries and businesses that are quieter during the summer months. For those employees, the summer is a wonderful time to recharge. It’s also a great time to sit back, re-evaluate, and start planning for the next steps in your career. Maybe you’ll start looking for a new job in the fall or enrol in a course to take you through the winter.   Summer might be a great time to think about investing in some career coaching. In so many fields, hiring slows right down for vacation season. This is your chance to invest in some “you time.” Relax, recharge and regroup, and do some daydreaming.  After all, from daydreams come ideas, and from ideas come plans. From plans come goals; and when we set goals we can achieve our dreams!   Invest in Yourself… If career coaching is on your mind this summer, I’d love to help. What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

What Does It Mean to Demonstrate Authentic Leadership?

Inexperienced leaders must recognize the difference between playing the “character” of what they think a leader should be and what authentic leadership is. This requires self-reflection and intentionally developing a genuine leadership style based on their own strengths, values, and a keen understanding of the team’s dynamics. Otherwise, their approach will seem hollow or one-sided and come across as inauthentic.

Including Gen Z, four generations in the workplace. What’s the secret to making it work?

In today’s dynamic workplace, organizations are navigating a unique era in which the workforce spans four distinct generations Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, to the emerging Generation Z or “Gen-Z.” With each generation bringing its own set of values, skills, and work styles to the table, building an effective, cohesive multigenerational team presents opportunities and challenges.

Exploring the Consequences of Microaggressions in the Workplace

During past training sessions, I’ve provided empirical and concrete examples of how discrimination and microaggressions can hurt more than the intended victims. Here, I’ll share one clear example, inspired by a recent TV interview, of how microaggressions and chronic mistreatment can impair retention and hurt the majority.
