A Message From Dr. Helen

In Canada and the US, one of the annual milestones in May is Mother’s Day. Like so many other people, this will be my second Mother’s Day in a row without being able to see my mom. I am grateful for access to technology that allows us to keep in touch. I also appreciate that at the other extreme, countless moms are seeing their children more than ever because of the switch to distance learning/virtual school – and they are managing this while also trying to work full time. I want to acknowledge the profound toll that this is taking on so many moms and their families. I hope that employers, colleagues, and others who know parents who are living with the ongoing consequences of the pandemic will try to be understanding and cooperative. Maya Angelo’s words are always so timely: “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” As always, this newsletter is designed to support people who want to build more resilient careers or organizations.

This is part of a growing trend whereby progressive employers are providing support for employees who face unique challenges that have been hiding in plain sight.
